Wooden canopy with tiles for garage door - Fir kit UGLAS

The UGLAS canopy is a raw fir timber kit designed to cover a garage door 300 cm wide. Its traditional frame structure — two curved brackets, two purlins and seven rafters — is compatible with a mechanical tile, slate or steel sheet roof. It is fixed directly to the wall, with no ground posts.

The depth is chosen according to the bracket: 80 or 100 cm with 60x60 cm brackets, 120 cm with 80x80 cm brackets. At 300 cm wide, it is also the widest wooden canopy in the catalogue, suited to large-span requirements without resorting to bespoke. The kit is supplied unassembled in raw timber, to be painted or stained before installation. Roofing and wall fixings must be sourced separately.

Installation advice

Start by marking the bracket fixing points on the façade, plumb on each side of the garage door. Identify solid masonry zones — garage door lintels are generally made of reinforced concrete, which provides a solid fixing point. Use heavy-duty expansion anchors (12 to 14 mm diameter recommended depending on tile weight).

Then fix the two purlins horizontally onto the brackets, then the seven rafters perpendicularly, evenly spaced. Always pre-drill before screwing. The roofing is fitted last: allow for a neutral silicone sealant between the top purlin and the wall to prevent water ingress at the rear of the frame.

For a mechanical tile roof, check that the slope of the brackets matches the minimum pitch required by the tile manufacturer (generally 30 degrees minimum).

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir used outdoors must be treated before installation. Apply a microporous wood stain or an exterior wood saturator in at least two coats, after light sanding with 120-grit paper. Renew the protection every 2 to 3 years. The tile roof protects the top of the frame from direct rain — pay particular attention to the undersides of the rafters and the brackets, which are more exposed to condensation.

Frequently asked questions

Can tiles be laid on this wooden canopy?

Yes, this is the primary use of this model. The solid fir frame (145x45 mm purlins, 45x30 mm rafters) is dimensioned to support a standard mechanical tile roof. Check that the pitch of the chosen brackets matches the minimum pitch required by your tile type — generally 30 degrees for common mechanical tiles. Tiles are not included in the kit.

Is this canopy suitable for a garage door?

Yes. The fixed width of 300 cm covers the majority of standard garage doors (240 to 280 cm wide), with a lateral protection overhang. For double-leaf garages of greater width (300 cm and over), please consult our bespoke model. Wall fixation is made on the concrete lintel or masonry above the door.

What depth should I choose for my garage canopy?

A depth of 100 cm (60x60 brackets) provides standard rain protection. If your garage door is recessed 40 cm or more into the façade, or if you also wish to protect the bottom of the door when opening, opt for 120 cm (80x80 brackets). The 80 cm depth is recommended for situations where the façade overhang is architecturally constrained.

Does fir hold up under a tile roof?

Under a tile roof, the fir is protected from direct rain on its upper face. The main risk is condensation on the lower faces. A stain or saturator treatment applied before installation, and renewed every 2 to 3 years on accessible parts, ensures a service life of 15 to 20 years under normal conditions.

Are the wall fixings included?

No. The kit assembly fixings are included, but wall fixings must be sourced separately. The choice depends on the façade material: for solid concrete (garage door lintel), 12 mm expansion anchors are generally suitable. For hollow brick, chemical anchors are recommended.

Is the UGLAS suitable as a large-span canopy?

Yes. At 300 cm wide, the UGLAS is the widest wooden canopy in the WoodUp catalogue, suited to garages and façades requiring a large roofing span without bespoke work. For widths exceeding 300 cm, consult our bespoke door canopy, available with no defined length limit.
