Check that the backrest is securely assembled before each use by ensuring the 4 wing nuts are tightly fastened. On steep slopes, the backrest can be removed for a lying position, reducing air resistance. Store the sledge in a dry place out of season — avoid prolonged moisture, which can cause the beech wood to swell. Oil the metal runners at the end of the season to prevent rust.
Dry the sledge after use before storing — do not store when wet. Lightly oil the metal runners with a light mineral oil at the end of the season. Check the tightness of the joints and the condition of the backrest wing nuts annually. A light sanding with 180-grit paper followed by a wood oil will preserve the beech from one season to the next.
The backrest can be left in place for storage. Removal is only useful to adjust usage (lying position) or for flat storage in a very confined space.
