The BLUFFY 26 is a folding loft ladder with metal side rails and wooden steps, providing access to an enclosed mezzanine or loft. It supports 190 kg, more than the all-wood models in the range.

It comes in 12 frame sizes, from 110 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm, with a 26 mm hatch containing 20 mm of insulation. The 40 cm-wide ladder has 12 steps and reaches ceiling heights of up to 280 cm. It is supplied without a handrail.

Choosing the right folding loft ladder

For a mezzanine or maintenance platform, the folding ladder frees up all the floor space when stowed. The BLUFFY 26 is suitable for occasional access; for daily use, a fixed staircase remains safer.

Its 26 mm hatch provides little insulation. Above a heated room, the BLUFFY 46 and 86 mm versions provide more insulation and support 210 kg. They include a handrail, except with the 55 cm-wide frames of the BLUFFY 46.

Installation advice

Ceiling opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing around 5 mm of clearance all round. Check that there is at least 135 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimming joists) with screws suited to the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the bottom section so that it rests flat on the floor. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridges.

Care and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between ladder sections and check that the hatch-opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if opening becomes stiff, and dust the steps.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which keeps it airtight.
