The CABAL 46 is an aluminium loft ladder with a 46 mm insulated hatch, including 40 mm of insulation, and a U-value of 0.85 W/m²·K. The aluminium makes the ladder lighter and easier to unfold and fold away.

It comes in 12 frame sizes, from 110 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm. The 40 cm-wide ladder has 12 treads, reaches ceilings up to 280 cm high and supports 160 kg. A handrail is supplied.

How to choose the right loft ladder

Aluminium does not rust and stays lightweight: an advantage when the hatch is used often, or in a garage or a space with little heating. The 46 mm hatch is suitable for a loft above a heated room.

Allow 128 cm of floor space for a 110 cm-long frame and 142 cm for the others, plus 161 or 165 cm of clearance.

Installation advice

Ceiling opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing approximately 5 mm around the edge. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimming joists) with screws suitable for the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and cut the final section so that it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, connect the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridging.

Care and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between the sections and make sure the hatch-opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if opening becomes stiff, and dust the treads.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which provides the airtight barrier.
