ADRET fir staircase – lower quarter-turn with alternating treads

The ADRET is a solid fir lower quarter-turn staircase with alternating treads, designed for smaller stairwell openings. With a floor footprint of just 183 cm at a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm, it takes up considerably less floor space than a conventional quarter-turn staircase of the same height. The alternating treads provide left and right foot placements in turn, reducing the footprint while remaining reasonably comfortable for regular access. The handrail is included – no additional accessories are needed for a standard installation.

The staircase comes as a kit in 2 packages, with fixings and assembly instructions. It can be cut down to suit floor-to-floor heights below 280 cm, down to a minimum of 240 cm (reducing its floor footprint to 162 cm). It is available only as a lower quarter-turn staircase, with a choice of right- or left-hand turn. The maximum load is 150 kg. The solid fir is supplied unfinished and untreated: apply a finish (stair varnish, oil or wood stain) before installation to protect the wood for everyday use.

Installation advice

Check the dimensions of your stairwell opening before ordering: at least 183 cm long and 70 cm wide. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the staircase can be cut down to a minimum of 240 cm, reducing its floor footprint to 162 cm. Any modification to the staircase or handrail is the installer’s responsibility and is excluded from after-sales support.

Specify the turn direction (right or left) when ordering; this is determined as you go up the stairs. A right-hand lower quarter-turn staircase turns right as you ascend. Apply a finish (stair varnish, oil or wood stain) to every surface before installation, including cut ends. On the alternating-tread steps, pay particular attention to the joints between the two half-treads, which are more exposed to wear.

Care and protection

The unfinished solid fir must be protected before use. A stair varnish (2 to 3 coats) offers the best abrasion resistance for the treads; a hardwax oil or wood stain is suitable for the stringers and handrail if you prefer a more natural look. Renew the protection on the treads every 3 to 5 years, depending on how heavily the stairs are used. For an isolated scratch, lightly sand the area and touch it up with a brush to restore the protection locally.

Before you buy: the ADRET’s alternating-tread steps require you to alternate between left and right foot placement. Climbing them is more intuitive than it may seem, but people unfamiliar with this type of staircase will need a few days to get used to it. This model is not recommended as a main staircase for people with reduced mobility or for frequently carrying bulky items. For a height of 240 cm, check the reduced footprint (162 cm) before finalising the stairwell opening. Floor fixings are not supplied; choose them to suit the surface (concrete, wood or tiles).

What is the difference between the ADRET staircase and a conventional lower quarter-turn staircase?

The ADRET has alternating-tread steps: each half-tread is offset from the other, reducing its floor footprint to 183 cm compared with a conventional lower quarter-turn staircase of the same height (generally 250–280 cm). In return, you alternate between left and right foot placement as you climb. For regular access to a mezzanine or loft, it offers a good balance between space-saving and comfort.

Can the ADRET staircase be cut down to a height of 2.40 m?

Yes. The ADRET can be cut down to a minimum floor-to-floor height of 240 cm. Its floor footprint will then be reduced to 162 cm. The handrail can also be shortened by the same proportion. Is the ADRET staircase available with an upper quarter-turn?

Is the handrail suitable for every type of wall?

The included handrail is designed to be supported by the stair stringers. Wall-mounting the handrail is not essential if the stringers are securely anchored to the floor and upper landing. If your layout requires additional wall fixings, use brackets suited to the wall material (concrete, brick or plaster); these are not supplied with the staircase.
