ADRET staircase in fir — bottom quarter-turn with alternating steps
The ADRET staircase is a bottom quarter-turn staircase with alternating steps in solid fir, designed for spaces with a reduced stairwell opening. With a footprint of only 183 cm for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm, it offers a significantly smaller floor area than a standard quarter-turn staircase of the same height. The alternating steps alternate the load-bearing points left and right, reducing the footprint whilst maintaining acceptable comfort for regular access. The handrail is included in the delivery — no additional accessories required for a standard installation.
The staircase is delivered as a kit in 2 parcels, with fixings and assembly instructions. It is cuttable to adapt to heights below 280 cm — minimum cuttable height: 240 cm (floor footprint reduced to 162 cm). It is available only as a bottom quarter-turn, right-handed or left-handed as chosen. The maximum supported load is 150 kg. The solid fir is delivered raw and untreated: a finish (varnish, oil, or stain) must be applied before installation to protect the wood and prepare it for daily use.

Installation advice
Check your stairwell dimensions before ordering: minimum 183 cm in length and 70 cm in width. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the staircase can be cut down to a minimum of 240 cm — the floor footprint will then be reduced to 162 cm. Any modification to the staircase or handrail is carried out under the installer's responsibility and excludes after-sales service cover.
Specify the direction (right-handed or left-handed) when ordering — it is defined in relation to the direction of ascent. A right-handed bottom quarter-turn turns to the right as you go up. Apply a finish (varnish, oil, or stain) on all faces before installation, including cut ends. On the alternating steps, pay particular attention to the junction areas between the two half-steps, which are more exposed to wear.
Maintenance and protection
Raw solid fir must be protected before use. A staircase varnish (2 to 3 coats) offers the best abrasion resistance on the steps; an oil-wax or stain is suitable for the stringers and handrail if a more natural appearance is desired. Renew the protection on the steps every 3 to 5 years depending on the level of traffic. In the event of minor scratches, light sanding followed by a brush touch-up is sufficient to restore the protection locally.
WoodUp tip
What to know before buying: the alternating steps of the ADRET require alternating left/right foot placement — the ascent is more intuitive than it appears, but does require a few days of adjustment for those unfamiliar with this type of staircase. This model is not recommended as a main staircase for people with reduced mobility or for frequent carrying of bulky items. For a height of 240 cm, make sure to check the cut-down footprint (162 cm) before confirming the stairwell opening. The floor fixing hardware is not supplied — provision should be made according to the type of surface (concrete, timber, tiles).
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the ADRET staircase and a standard bottom quarter-turn staircase?
The ADRET uses alternating steps: each half-step is offset from the other, which reduces the floor footprint (183 cm) compared to a standard bottom quarter-turn of the same height (generally 250–280 cm). In return, the ascent alternates between left and right support. For regular access to a mezzanine or loft, it is a good compromise between space saving and comfort.
Can the ADRET staircase be cut down to a floor-to-floor height of 2m40?
Yes. The ADRET can be cut down to a minimum floor-to-floor height of 240 cm. The floor footprint will then be reduced to 162 cm. The handrail can also be cut down in the same proportions. Please note: any modification to the staircase or handrail is carried out under the installer's responsibility and excludes the WoodUp after-sales guarantee.
Is the ADRET staircase available as a top quarter-turn?
No. The ADRET is not available as a top quarter-turn in standard configuration. For a top quarter-turn in fir, refer to the NERONNE model (ID 27) or BAVAT Fir (ID 997). A bespoke solution can be assessed by the WoodUp customer service team depending on your configuration.
Is the handrail suitable for all wall types?
The included handrail is designed to rest on the staircase stringers. Wall fixings for the handrail are not compulsory if the stringers are securely anchored to the floor and upper landing. If your configuration requires additional wall fixings, provide wall brackets suited to your wall type (concrete, brick, plaster) — not supplied with the staircase.
What finish should be applied to a fir staircase with alternating steps?
For the steps, a staircase varnish (2 to 3 coats) is recommended for its abrasion resistance. For the stringers and handrail, an oil-wax or stain provides a more natural appearance. Apply the finish before installation, on all faces including cut ends. Renew the protection on the steps every 3 to 5 years depending on use.
How do I determine whether the ADRET staircase is right-handed or left-handed?
The direction is defined in relation to the direction of ascent. A right-handed bottom quarter-turn staircase turns to the right as you go up. To determine it: stand at the bottom of the staircase, facing upwards — if the quarter-turn is on your right, it is a right-handed model. If you are unsure about your configuration, contact WoodUp before ordering for confirmation.
