Double Quarter-Turn Staircase ALBULA – Comfort Range, 288 cm, Riser 18 cm, Going 22 cm
The ALBULA staircase is a double quarter-turn staircase from the Comfort range, available in beech, oak or glued laminated fir. Its double quarter-turn configuration allows two 90° changes of direction, for installation in a rectangular stairwell opening of 164x175 cm. The floor-to-floor height is 288 cm for 15 steps, with a riser height of 18 cm and a going of 22 cm – optimal Blondel's formula.
The width is 80 cm. Available with or without risers and handrail. The direction (right or left) must be specified at the time of order. The rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening (non-square) is more accessible than 180x180 cm DQT models – it can fit in spaces where a square opening would not be possible. The ALBULA is the comfort version of the ALBULA Standard (identical footprint, going 22 cm vs 19 cm in Standard).

Installation advice
Check the stairwell opening (164x175 cm minimum) on finished dimensions – it is rectangular, not square. Determine the direction of the double quarter turn before ordering – this is final. Pre-drill on beech and oak. A minimum of two people is required for DQT assembly. The handrail must be installed during assembly if included – not after full assembly. Apply finishing after complete installation.
Maintenance and protection
Apply a varnish in 2–3 coats (beech, oak) or an oil-wax (fir) before first use. For a main DQT staircase with heavy traffic, varnish is recommended for all species. Renewal every 5–7 years. Regular cleaning: damp cloth, pH neutral.
WoodUp advice
The ALBULA stands out from other WoodUp DQT models with its rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening – it is narrower in one direction (164 cm) and longer in the other (175 cm). This asymmetry allows installation where a square 180x180 cm opening is not possible. Make sure to check the orientation of the opening (the 164 cm dimension on the short axis and 175 cm on the long axis) before ordering – a reversed 175x164 cm opening may cause orientation issues.
Good to know before buying: the ALBULA Comfort range offers the same climbing comfort as the straight GAVIA (riser 18 cm / going 22 cm) in a DQT configuration. If your space allows it, it is the best compromise between comfort and flexible installation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the ALBULA and the GOULES / ROCLES 180x180?
The ALBULA is in the Comfort range (riser 18 cm / going 22 cm) with a rectangular stairwell opening of 164x175 cm. The GOULES and ROCLES 180x180 are in the Standard range (riser 19 cm / going 21 cm) with a square stairwell opening of 180x180 cm. The ALBULA is more comfortable and requires a smaller opening; the 180x180 models are Standard but require a larger square opening.
Can the ALBULA stairwell opening be square (165x165 cm)?
The recommended stairwell opening is 164x175 cm (rectangular). An opening of 175x175 cm is compatible – it even provides more clearance in the short dimension. An opening of 164x164 cm is insufficient in the long dimension. The 175 cm dimension is the main constraint – do not go below this.
Can the ALBULA be trimmed for a height of 270 cm?
Yes. For 270 cm, removing one step (15 steps x 18 cm = 270 cm exactly) achieves the desired height without cutting the stringers. Alternatively, trim slightly according to the chart in the instructions to keep 15 steps at a slightly different height. Check on finished floor and ceiling.
Beech or oak for the ALBULA – which to choose?
For a main DQT staircase with heavy traffic, glued laminated oak is the most durable (700 kg/m³). Glued laminated beech is the balanced choice – good resistance, discreet grain, light colour. Fir is suitable for a tight budget with a careful finish. On a DQT, the quarter-turn pieces are subject to additional stress – dense species (beech, oak) are recommended.
Can the ALBULA be installed without professional help?
Yes, with a good level of DIY skills and two people. The instructions are detailed. Specific points to watch for DQTs: the assembly order is strict (start with the lower quarter-turn module, then the stringers, then the treads), level and plumb must be checked at each stage. Allow a full day for two experienced people.
What finish for an ALBULA in fir or oak with heavy use?
For a comfort DQT staircase with heavy main use, an aqua-polyurethane varnish in 3 coats is the optimal protection, regardless of species. The balanced treads of the quarter-turn modules experience asymmetric wear – a thicker finish compensates for this. Renew every 4–5 years on the turning treads, every 7 years on the straight flights.

Installation advice
To be installed simultaneously with the staircase. Fix the posts, bottom rail, spindles, then the handrail in that order. Check a height of 90 cm minimum from the nosing and a spacing of less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012). Apply varnish or paint before final fixing. Two people recommended.
Maintenance and protection
The wood is delivered raw and untreated. Apply a protective finish before use: 2-coat satin varnish (maximum durability), oil-wax (natural look, renewal every 1–2 years) or paint. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.
Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based products.
Frequently asked questions
What is the outer side of a staircase?
On a quarter-turn staircase, there is the inner side (the side towards which the staircase turns, inside the curve) and the outer side (the side opposite the curve, the free side of the flight). This railing is positioned on the outer side. To determine it, walk up your staircase and observe which side the quarter turn is on.
Why is this railing non-reversible?
The quarter-turn geometry requires a specific shape for the railing. An outer-side railing cannot be reversed to become an inner-side railing — the angles and lengths of each section differ. Always check your configuration before ordering: quarter-turn position and direction of ascent.
Can this railing be installed after fitting the ALBULA staircase?
This railing must be installed simultaneously with the staircase — some fixings are only accessible during assembly. Plan the installation at the same time.
What finish should be applied to this wooden railing?
The handrail, subject to daily contact, requires an abrasion-resistant finish: 2-coat satin varnish is recommended. For the spindles and posts, an oil-wax (natural look) or paint depending on the décor. Apply the finish before final fixing to treat hidden areas.
Does the spacing between the spindles comply with the safety standard?
The spacing must be less than 11 cm to prevent the passage of an 11 cm sphere (standard NF P01-012). Check the actual spacing after installation depending on your staircase configuration, particularly at the bottom of the flight where the railing is more open.
