PECCATA Bottom Quarter-Turn Staircase - Glulam Oak, 280 cm, 14 Steps
The PECCATA staircase is a glulam oak bottom quarter-turn staircase, supplied as a kit for on-site assembly. Its bottom quarter-turn configuration places the 90° change of direction at the bottom of the flight, which optimises integration into corner stairwell openings and frees up the space under the first flight for potential storage. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 14 steps, it has a width of 80 cm and a recommended stairwell opening of 85x282 cm.
The step height is 20 cm with a tread depth of 19 cm — dimensions of the Standard range. The step section is 230x30 mm, wider than standard models, providing a generous tread surface. The glulam oak is supplied raw: a protective finish is required before first use. Available in right or left direction depending on the room configuration.

Key features
- ✓ Bottom quarter-turn: turn at the bottom of the flight — space under the staircase can be used for storage
- ✓ 230x30 mm section: wider steps than the standard range — generous tread surface, minimal flex
- ✓ Glulam oak: dense (700 kg/m³), stable, wear-resistant — superior quality to fir
- ✓ Pre-drilling required: oak is a hardwood — screwing without a pilot hole risks splitting the wood
- ✓ Choice of direction: right or left — to be specified at the time of ordering, cannot be changed after delivery
- ✓ Finishing required: raw oak marks quickly — apply a varnish before use
Installation advice
Preparation: check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm maximum) and the stairwell opening (85x282 cm minimum) before unpacking the kit. These measurements apply to finished floor and ceiling, including coverings. Determine the quarter-turn direction before ordering — this choice is final.
Screws: always pre-drill before screwing into oak. Oak is a hardwood that may split if screwed without a pilot hole. Use HSS drill bits with a diameter smaller than that of the screws.
Handrail: the handrail can be added after the staircase has been assembled — it is reversible (right or left). Fixings are included.
Finishing: apply 2 to 3 coats of varnish before first use. Hidden surfaces (undersides of steps) can be treated before assembly.
Maintenance and protection
Raw oak must be protected before first use. Without protection, marks become ingrained in the open grain of the oak. Recommended options:
- ✓ Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2–3 coats, maximum resistance (renewal every 5–7 years)
- ✓ Oak oil-wax: natural finish that enhances the grain, annual renewal
- ✓ Polyurethane varnish: shine and impact resistance
Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH neutral. Check that fixings are tight once a year.
WoodUp tip
The PECCATA in oak stands out for its 230x30 mm step section — wider than standard oak models (210x30 mm). This additional 20 mm of width provides a more comfortable foot placement surface, particularly for wider shoe sizes, and reduces the noticeable overhang at the front edge of the step.
Important before purchasing: the direction of the quarter-turn (right or left) must be determined before ordering. To choose it, stand at the foot of the staircase facing the ascent — the direction of the turn at the bottom corresponds to the side towards which the first flight turns. If in doubt, draw a sketch showing the position of the stairwell opening and contact WoodUp customer service.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the PECCATA and the MOLEDE bottom quarter-turn staircase?
The PECCATA is made from glulam oak with a step section of 230x30 mm and 14 steps for 280 cm. The MOLEDE is made from glulam beech with a section of 210x30 mm and also 14 steps for 280 cm. The PECCATA offers a wider step (+20 mm) and a harder wood species. The MOLEDE is slightly less expensive with a standard-width step. The footprint and stairwell opening are identical (282 cm / 85x282 cm).
How do I determine the right or left direction for the PECCATA?
Stand at the foot of the staircase, facing the ascent. If the turn at the bottom goes to your right, choose "bottom right quarter-turn". If it goes to your left, choose "bottom left quarter-turn". This choice is final at the time of ordering. If in doubt, draw a plan of your room showing the position of the stairwell opening and submit it to WoodUp customer service for validation.
Can the PECCATA be trimmed to a height of 260 cm?
Yes. The trimming is carried out on the stringers from the bottom using the chart provided in the instructions. For 260 cm, the trim is approximately 20 cm, which slightly alters the height of the first step. Check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and ceiling before any trimming.
Why choose oak rather than beech for a quarter-turn staircase?
Oak (700 kg/m³) is slightly denser and more resistant to wear than beech (680 kg/m³). Aesthetically, oak has a more pronounced grain and a naturally warm tone (golden to brown); beech has a more regular grain and a lighter tone. Oak is recommended if the staircase is subject to heavy traffic or if you want a wood species that develops a natural patina over time. Beech is perfectly suited to standard family use.
What is the lifespan of this oak staircase?
A properly protected and maintained glulam oak staircase has a service life of 30 to 50 years under normal interior use. The varnish should be renewed every 5–7 years depending on traffic. The steps can be sanded and refinished several times over their lifetime depending on their residual thickness (30 mm at the outset).
Can storage be installed under the PECCATA bottom quarter-turn staircase?
Yes. The bottom quarter-turn configuration creates a triangular space under the first flight. With a footprint of 282 cm by 80 cm, this space can accommodate a cupboard or shelving. The available height depends on the height of the first step and the pitch — plan this storage integration before installation to allow for wall cladding and fixings.

Installation advice
To be installed simultaneously with the staircase. Fix the newel posts, bottom rail, spindles then handrail in that order. Check the height of 90 cm minimum from the nosing and spacing of less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012). Apply varnish or paint before final fixing. Two people recommended.
Maintenance and protection
The wood is supplied raw untreated. Apply a protective finish before use: satin varnish 2 coats (maximum resistance), oil-wax (natural look, renewal every 1-2 years) or paint. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.
Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based products.
Frequently asked questions
What is the exterior side of a staircase?
On a quarter-turn staircase, there is the interior side (the side towards which the staircase turns, inside of the curve) and the exterior side (the side opposite the curve, the open side of the flight). This handrail is positioned on the exterior side. To determine it, go up your staircase and observe which side the quarter-turn is on.
Why is this handrail non-reversible?
The geometry of the quarter-turn imposes a specific shape on the handrail. An exterior-side handrail cannot be reversed to become an interior-side handrail - the angles and lengths of each section differ. You must check your configuration before ordering: position of the quarter-turn and direction of ascent.
Can this handrail be installed after the PECCATA staircase has been fitted?
This handrail must be installed simultaneously with the staircase - some fixings are only accessible during assembly. Plan the installation at the same time.
What finish should be applied to this wooden handrail?
The handrail, subject to daily contact, requires an abrasion-resistant finish: satin varnish 2 coats is recommended. For the spindles and newel posts, an oil-wax (natural look) or paint depending on the décor. Apply the finish before final fixing to treat hidden areas.
Does the spacing between the spindles comply with the safety standard?
The spacing must be less than 11 cm to prevent the passage of an 11 cm sphere (standard NF P01-012). Check the actual spacing after installation according to your staircase configuration, particularly at the bottom of the flight where the handrail is more open.
