Key points

  • Glued laminated beech: stable, wear-resistant, suited to intensive everyday use
  • Landing nosing included: neat flush finish at upper floor level
  • Detailed packaging in 5 parcels: optimised handling, each component identified
  • Footprint 273 cm: compact for a top quarter-turn with landing nosing
  • Direction non-reversible: must be determined before ordering - final
  • Pre-drilling required: dense beech - always pre-drill before screwing

Installation tips

Check the footprint (273 cm) and the stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Determine the direction (right or left) - finalised at time of order. Sort the 5 parcels according to the instructions before beginning assembly. Pre-drill on beech before any screwing. Minimum two people. The handrail can be added after assembly.

Maintenance and protection

Apply a staircase varnish in 2-3 coats before first use. Glued laminated beech marks quickly without protection. Renew every 5-7 years. The landing nosing, subject to direct foot traffic, may require more frequent renewal. Cleaning: damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp tip

The BAVAT Beech is a quality top quarter-turn staircase with detailed packaging that facilitates assembly: each component is packaged separately and identified, which reduces assembly errors. The 5 separate parcels also allow for handling in constrained spaces - bringing up the stringers (parcel 1) separately from the quarter-turn components (parcel 2) avoids unpleasant surprises in narrow corridors.

Important before purchasing: the BAVAT is available in several versions (beech, oak, fir) - make sure you are ordering the beech version if that is your choice. The tread thickness is 30 mm.

Frequently asked questions

What is the landing nosing and how is it fitted?

The landing nosing is a beech piece fitted at the edge of the stairwell opening, in line with the last step. It creates a clean transition between the last step of the staircase and the floor covering of the upper level. It is fitted as the final step, once the staircase is fully assembled and secured. It is fixed by screwing or gluing depending on the adjacent floor covering.

What is the difference between the BAVAT Beech and the NERONNE fir in top quarter-turn?

The NERONNE is in fir, Standard range (rise 20 cm / going 19 cm), footprint 287 cm, stairwell opening 85x287 cm, likely delivered in 3 parcels. The BAVAT Beech is in beech, Standard range (same dimensions), footprint 273 cm, stairwell opening 273x82 cm, 5 parcels. The BAVAT has a slightly smaller footprint and is in beech - more durable. The NERONNE is in fir - more economical.

Does the BAVAT Beech exist in an oak or fir version?

Yes. The BAVAT is available in several wood species: beech (this model), glued laminated oak (BAVAT Oak) and fir (BAVAT FIR). The dimensions are identical (same footprint, same stairwell opening, same floor-to-floor height). The choice of species determines the aesthetics and durability. Refer to the BAVAT Oak and BAVAT FIR product sheets for details.

Can the handrail be fitted after the BAVAT has been assembled?

Yes. The handrail is optional and can be installed after the staircase has been assembled. It is not reversible on a top quarter-turn - its direction corresponds to the direction of the staircase. The fixings are supplied with the handrail.

Why is the BAVAT delivered in 5 parcels rather than 2 or 3?

Packaging in 5 separate components (stringers / quarter-turn / newel posts / treads / risers) optimises handling and reduces the risk of damage during transport. The stringers (parcel 1) are 3060 mm long and the quarter-turn section (parcel 2) is bulky - separating them allows them to be brought up one by one in narrow spaces. This packaging also makes it easier to sort the parts before assembly.

Can the BAVAT be trimmed for a height of 260 cm?

Yes. For 260 cm, remove one step (13 steps x 20 cm = 260 cm exactly) or trim the stringers slightly according to the diagram in the instructions. The first option (removing a step) is simpler. The second (trimming the stringers) allows you to keep the same number of steps with a slightly adjusted rise. Check on finished floor and ceiling before any work.

Installation advice

To be installed at the same time as the staircase. Fix posts, bottom rail, spindles then handrail in that order. Check the height of minimum 90 cm from the nosing and spacing less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012). Apply varnish or paint before final fixing. Two people recommended.

Maintenance and protection

The wood is delivered raw and untreated. Apply a protective finish before use: satin varnish 2 coats (maximum resistance), oil-wax (natural look, renewal every 1–2 years) or paint. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.

Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish. Avoid abrasive or solvent-based products.

Frequently asked questions

What is the inner side of a staircase?

On a quarter-turn staircase, a distinction is made between the inner side (the side towards which the staircase turns, inside of the curve) and the outer side (the side opposite the curve, the free side of the flight). This handrail is positioned on the outer side. To determine this, go up your staircase and observe which side the quarter turn is on.

Why is this handrail non-reversible?

The geometry of the quarter turn imposes a specific shape on the handrail. An outer-side handrail cannot be reversed to become an inner-side one – the angles and lengths of each section differ. Always check your configuration before ordering: position of the quarter turn and direction of ascent.

Can this handrail be installed after the BAVAT staircase has been fitted?

This handrail must be installed at the same time as the staircase – some fixings are only accessible during assembly. Plan the installation at the same time.

What finish should be applied to this wooden handrail?

The handrail subject to daily contact requires an abrasion-resistant finish: satin varnish 2 coats is recommended. For the spindles and posts, an oil-wax (natural look) or paint depending on the décor. Apply the finish before final fixing to treat hidden areas.

Does the spacing between spindles comply with the safety standard?

The spacing must be less than 11 cm to prevent the passage of an 11 cm sphere (standard NF P01-012). Check the actual spacing after installation according to your staircase configuration, particularly at the bottom of the flight where the handrail is more open.
