Round exotic hardwood handrail Ø42 mm – dense exotic wood, interior and sheltered exterior
This round solid exotic hardwood handrail (Entandrophragma utile) features a cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter, offering a continuous and regular grip along its entire length. Exotic hardwood is a dense African tropical wood (~640 kg/m³) with a characteristic rosewood-brown hue. Its natural resistance to fungi and wood-boring insects makes it suitable for both indoor and sheltered outdoor use without any particular preservation treatment.
Compared to European hardwoods such as beech or oak, exotic hardwood offers naturally superior durability in humid conditions. Its fine grain and regular surface after machining facilitate the application of a uniform finish. For directly exposed outdoor use in rainy conditions, an exotic wood oil or UV saturator is recommended to limit greying and prevent surface cracks.
Four lengths are available: 150, 195, 250 and 295 cm. Supplied raw, it can be cut to the desired length. Fixing brackets are to be ordered separately. For outdoor use, stainless steel fixings are recommended.

Installation advice
Select brackets suited to a round profile of Ø42 mm. Position them at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor level.
For outdoor use, use a minimum A2 stainless steel fixing for brackets and all fastenings – the acidic tannins in exotic hardwood accelerate the corrosion of ordinary screws. Pre-drilling is recommended before screwing into this dense wood. Apply the finish before installation where possible, covering the cut ends as a priority.
Maintenance and protection
In sheltered outdoor conditions, periodic protection is recommended to maintain the wood colour and prevent greying. Options for exotic hardwood:
- Exotic wood oil: penetrates the fibres, nourishes the wood, preserves the rosewood-brown hue, reapplication every 1 to 2 years
- Exotic wood saturator: enhanced protection against moisture and UV, durability 2 to 3 years
- Exterior wood stain: protective film, durability 2 to 4 years depending on exposure
Without a finish, exotic hardwood gradually greys outdoors – an aesthetic phenomenon with no impact on its mechanical properties. Indoors, a simple damp wipe is sufficient for routine maintenance.
WoodUp Tip
What to know before purchasing: the round Ø42 mm profile requires cradle brackets. Exotic hardwoods are hard: pre-drilling is recommended, stainless steel fixings advised. Wall fixings not included. Exotic wood oil recommended before installation. Depending on the species, sheltered outdoor use is possible.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose exotic hardwood for an exterior handrail rather than beech or ash?
Beech and ash are exclusive indoor hardwoods – they deteriorate quickly outdoors without specific preservation treatment. Exotic hardwood benefits from natural resistance to fungi and insects, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor use without chemical preservation. For any handrail or balustrade in contact with the elements outdoors, exotic hardwood is the appropriate choice among the solid wood options in the range.
What is the difference between the round exotic hardwood handrail and the moulded version?
Both are made from solid exotic hardwood with the same available lengths. The round Ø42 mm version offers a continuous cylindrical grip, with no angles or relief. The moulded 50x50 mm version has a square section with softened corners and a 21x5 mm groove – its grip feels slightly different and its profile integrates better in interiors with clean straight lines. The choice depends on grip comfort and desired aesthetics.
What brackets should be used for a round exotic hardwood handrail?
Brackets must be suited to a round profile of Ø42 mm – collar or cradle brackets, different from grooved brackets. For outdoor use, choose stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised steel brackets. Lacquered steel brackets are for indoor use only. Plan for one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for a stable fixing.
Does exotic hardwood grey outdoors?
Yes, like all natural woods, exotic hardwood gradually greys without a finish outdoors – typically within 6 to 12 months depending on exposure. This greying is purely aesthetic and does not affect the strength of the wood. To preserve the original rosewood-brown hue, apply an exotic wood oil or UV saturator, to be renewed every 1 to 2 years.
Is this handrail PEFC or FSC certified?
Exotic hardwood may be PEFC or FSC certified depending on the batch origin. To verify the certification of this specific product, contact Woodup directly. Purchasing certified tropical timber guarantees responsible forest management and traceability of the species from its forest of origin.
Can this handrail be cut to a precise length?
Yes. Exotic hardwood can be cut with a circular saw fitted with a fine-tooth blade. Sand the cut end with 120-grit sandpaper, then immediately apply a coat of oil or saturator to the ends – these are the areas most exposed to moisture and should be treated as a priority, even for indoor use.
