Bespoke laminated timber balustrade with horizontal metal rails
This bespoke balustrade combines posts and a handrail in laminated solid timber with an infill of 2 horizontal metal rails. Choose one timber species throughout: fir, beech or oak. The bonded layers reduce warping and twisting over time. The horizontal infill lets light and sightlines through, creating a contemporary look that marks a boundary without closing off the space.
It is designed for dividing indoor spaces: marking out a seating area, edging a raised platform or split level, or bordering a change in level of less than 1 m. For a mezzanine, upper-floor landing or stairwell opening, where the NF P01-012 standard requires a non-climbable lower section and rails spaced no more than 18 cm apart, we recommend a model with spindles or a solid lower section.
The balustrade is made to the dimensions you enter in the WoodUp configurator, then delivered as a kit with instructions and assembly screws. Allow 8 to 10 weeks for manufacture.

Key points
- ✓ Timber and metal: laminated solid timber posts and handrail, with horizontal metal rails for a contemporary look.
- ✓ Open feel: the horizontal rails let light through and keep the view clear between two areas.
- ✓ 1 m high: the handrail is at a height suitable for leaning on, to define a space or edge a raised platform.
- ✓ Laminated timber: bonded layers that reduce warping, in fir, beech or oak to match existing flooring or stairs.
- ✓ Bespoke length: made to the exact dimensions of the space to be divided.
- ✓ Complete assembly kit: instructions and assembly screws included.
Choosing the right balustrade
This model is suitable when the balustrade is used to define a space rather than protect against a significant fall: at the edge of a raised platform, between a living room and entrance hall, or on a split level with a few steps. More open than a spindle model, it preserves light and views between areas.
Where the drop exceeds 1 m, such as at the edge of a mezzanine or upper-floor landing, the NF P01-012 standard requires a non-climbable lower section and a spacing of no more than 18 cm between horizontal rails. For these locations, choose a balustrade with vertical spindles or a solid lower section.
Installation advice
Measure carefully the length to be covered and the positions of the fixing points before using the configurator. The balustrade is made to the dimensions ordered: a measuring error means it will need to be made again.
First secure the posts to a strong substrate, then fit the metal rails and install the handrail last. The supplied screws are intended for timber. For a concrete slab, provide suitable fixings, not included. With beech and oak, pre-drill before inserting each screw to prevent splitting.
Apply the finish to the timber components before assembly, while all faces and joint areas are accessible.
Care and protection
The posts and handrail are supplied unfinished: a protective finish is needed before use. Choose a hard-wearing varnish for high-traffic areas, a hardwax oil for a natural matt look, or paint for a coloured balustrade.
Clean the metal rails with soapy water and a soft cloth. Check that the joints and fixings are tight once a year.
Frequently asked questions
What is this timber and metal balustrade designed for?
This balustrade is designed to define an indoor space or border a small change in level: a raised platform, a split level with a few steps, or a division between a living room and entrance hall. In these settings, the 2 horizontal rails mark a clear boundary while keeping the room open and bright, where a spindle model would close off the space more.
Is this timber and metal balustrade suitable for a mezzanine?
For a mezzanine or upper-floor landing, we recommend a different model. When the drop exceeds 1 m, the NF P01-012 standard requires a non-climbable lower section and no more than 18 cm between horizontal rails. These requirements are met by models designed for this use. The bespoke balustrade with timber spindles or the model with a solid lower section meets them.
What are the benefits of laminated timber for a balustrade?
Laminated timber is made from layers of solid wood bonded together. Compared with a single piece of wood, this construction reduces warping, twisting and splitting, helping the posts and handrail stay straight over time.
How do I order this bespoke balustrade?
Use the WoodUp online configurator: enter the exact length, choose the timber species for the posts and handrail, then place your order. The balustrade is made to your dimensions in 8 to 10 weeks and delivered to your home.
Are floor fixings included?
Assembly screws and instructions are included, but mounting plates and fixings for concrete substrates are not. The right fixings depend on the type of floor you have. If in doubt, contact WoodUp before ordering and specify your floor type.
Can the timber posts be painted?
Yes. The posts and handrail are supplied unfinished and can be painted, oiled or varnished. Apply the finish before assembly, after lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper. Beech, with its fine, even grain, is particularly well suited to light-coloured paint.
