Custom wooden door canopy - Fir or Douglas fir kit
This custom canopy is a timber frame kit — fir or Douglas fir — manufactured to the dimensions provided at the time of order. It is intended for entrance doors whose width does not match standard lengths (150, 200, 250 cm), or for projects requiring a specific depth or wood species. The minimum length is 200 cm; there is no maximum length defined in the catalogue.
The kit includes two purlins with a 145x45 mm section, rafters with a minimum section of 45x30 mm and assembly fixings. The brackets are available in straight or curved versions, in four depths: 80, 100, 120 or 140 cm. The covering (tiles, slates, steel sheet) and wall fixings plugs are to be provided separately.

Fir or Douglas fir: which wood species to choose?
Fir is more economical and easy to work with. Outdoors, it must be treated with a wood stain or saturating oil before installation — without protection, it deteriorates within a few seasons. It is the common choice for canopies painted or stained to match the facade.
Douglas fir is naturally more resistant to fungi and moisture (use class 3 without treatment). It can be left raw outdoors and gradually turns grey, or treated to preserve its golden colour. It is the recommended choice for north-facing facades or regions with high rainfall.

Installation advice
To determine the length to order, add at least 20 cm on each side of your door width. A 100 cm door therefore requires a canopy of at least 140 cm — 200 cm remains the minimum available here, which gives 50 cm of overhang on each side for a standard door.
Fix the brackets to the facade by locating solid masonry zones (lintel, ring beam). The plugs required depend on the substrate: expansion plugs for concrete, chemical anchors for hollow brick. Always pre-drill the wood before screwing. Full assembly by two people takes 4 to 6 hours depending on the length and experience.
Apply the protection (wood stain, saturating oil or paint) before installation, on all faces — including cut ends — for optimum protection.
Maintenance and protection
For fir: microporous wood stain or saturating oil in a minimum of two coats before installation, to be renewed every 2 to 3 years. For Douglas fir: a first coat of saturating oil is recommended even if not obligatory — it slows greying and limits surface cracking. In both cases, an annual rinse with clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I order a canopy to fit my door dimensions?
Indicate the desired length (in cm), the depth (80, 100, 120 or 140 cm), the bracket type (straight or curved) and the wood species (fir or Douglas fir) when placing your order. The kit is manufactured based on this information. If you are unsure about the dimensions, measure the width of your door and add a minimum of 20 cm on each side for the protective overhang.
What is the difference between a canopy with straight and curved brackets?
Straight brackets give a clean, contemporary line, suited to modern or minimalist facades. Curved brackets — with their arched curve — have a more traditional look, often associated with country-style or regional homes. Both types offer the same structural resistance; the choice is purely aesthetic.
Can you build a canopy yourself rather than buying it as a kit?
Yes, it is possible with the right equipment. The main challenges are cutting the curved brackets (requires a band saw and a jig) and assembling level on the facade. A prefabricated kit has the advantage of pre-formed brackets, components with verified sections and suitable fixings — which reduces the build time to 4 to 6 hours of assembly compared to a full day for a build from scratch.
What depth of canopy is needed to properly protect an entrance door?
The basic rule is to cover at minimum the area in front of the door where visitors stand, i.e. 80 to 100 cm. For regions with frequent driving rain (west-facing facades, Atlantic coast), 120 cm offers better protection. A depth of 140 cm is recommended for doors set deeply into the facade or entrances with a front step.
Fir or Douglas fir for an outdoor canopy?
Douglas fir is recommended if you want to minimise maintenance: it is naturally resistant to moisture without mandatory treatment and lasts 20 to 30 years outdoors with simple protection. Fir is suitable if the canopy is regularly painted or stained — it is less expensive and just as structurally sound, but requires more frequent maintenance (every 2 to 3 years).
Can a canopy be ordered in a large length, over 300 cm?
Yes, this is precisely the advantage of the custom-made model. There is no maximum length defined in the catalogue: the structure is manufactured to the dimensions provided at the time of order. For long lengths (over 300 cm), purlins with a 145x45 mm section are used and a third central bracket may be recommended to limit deflection. Additional brackets or consoles are available separately. Indicate your exact length when ordering.
