Straight Solid Wood Post H 120cm Section 70x70mm – 4 Species for Balustrade

This straight post for balustrades and handrail guards measures 120 cm in height with a square cross-section of 70x70 mm. It is available in four species — douglas, fir, pine or beech — to suit each use context and each budget. Sold per unit, it allows you to compose a fully bespoke balustrade or to add an intermediate post to an existing kit.

The choice of species directly determines the intended use: beech is reserved for interior use (sensitive to moisture), fir and pine are suitable for interior and sheltered exterior use with treatment, douglas is the most suitable species for exposed exterior use thanks to its natural class 3 resistance. All are supplied rough and untreated, ready to receive the finish of your choice.

Installation advice

Choosing the species according to use: For an interior staircase or a mezzanine, beech provides the neatest finishes (fine grain, pinkish white). Fir and pine are more economical and perfectly suited to interior use. For a covered terrace or a sheltered exterior staircase, choose douglas — its natural resistance (class 3) allows it to hold up for several years without intensive treatment, even under moderate exposure conditions.

Fixing: Space the posts 1.5 m maximum apart. Fix each post with a floor plate suited to the substrate. Check verticality with a spirit level before final tightening. Pre-drill the assembly joints to Ø4 mm before final screwing to prevent splitting of the wood in the square cross-section.

Maintenance and protection

Indoors, apply a varnish or oil-wax before use. Outdoors in a sheltered location (fir, pine), renew the wood stain or exterior oil every 2 to 3 years. Douglas outdoors without treatment will naturally grey but retains its mechanical properties for several years. To maintain the original colour, apply an exterior wood saturating oil annually.

Frequently asked questions

Which species to choose for an exterior terrace balustrade?

Douglas is the best choice for exposed exterior use among the 4 available species. Its natural class 3 resistance allows it to withstand the elements without curative treatment. Fir and pine require an exterior wood stain and regular renewal. Beech must be completely excluded for exterior use — it degrades rapidly in moisture.

Is this 70x70mm post compatible with WoodUp straight spindles?

Yes. The straight spindles Straight solid wood spindle, straight slats Straight balustrade slat 95cm and moulded slats Moulded solid wood slat in the WoodUp range are dimensioned to fit between posts with a 70x70mm cross-section. The bottom rails Solid wood bottom rail and handrails Moulded solid wood handrail also bear on this standard cross-section.

Can this post be cut down if the height is too great?

Yes. All four species can easily be cut to length with a mitre saw or a circular saw. If you reduce the height of the post, recalculate the position of the assembly drill holes accordingly. Sand the cut edge before applying the finish.

How many posts for a 2-metre balustrade?

For a 2 m span, you need a minimum of 2 posts — one at each end. If one end is anchored to a wall or a stringer, a single free post is sufficient. For a span of 3 m or more, add an intermediate post every 1.5 m.
