Installation tips
Assemble the panels on a flat surface. Position the 4 sides and screw the corners using the included stainless steel fixings, starting with the lower corners to ensure the frame is plumb. Place the raised bed on stable, clear ground — on gravel or a slab, slide a geotextile membrane underneath before filling to retain the soil. Fill with a mixture of topsoil and compost (60/40). The filling capacity is 162 litres for the 120x60 and 324 litres for the 120x120.
Maintenance and protection
Natural Douglas fir will grey outdoors within 6 to 12 months without affecting its mechanical properties. To preserve the characteristic pinkish-brown colour, apply an outdoor wood oil or wood stain once a year (April–May). The stainless steel fixings require no maintenance. At the end of the season, partially empty the bed if you live in an area with severe frost to reduce stress on the joints.
Frequently asked questions
Can this raised bed be placed directly on a concrete slab?
Yes. On a concrete slab, place plastic shims or adjustable pads under the corners to ensure ventilation of the base of the wood and prevent the accumulation of standing water beneath the structure.
Does Douglas fir resist outdoor conditions without treatment?
Douglas fir has a natural durability class 3, allowing it to withstand several years outdoors without treatment when not in contact with the ground. An annual oiling significantly extends the lifespan and preserves the colour.
Can several modules be combined to create an L-shaped raised bed?
Yes. The 120x60 and 120x120 modules can be placed side by side or at an angle to create L-shaped or U-shaped configurations depending on the available space. The modules are independent — no fixings between them are required.
How much soil depth can be added to these raised beds?
The usable interior depth is 45 cm, which suits the majority of common vegetables. For deep-rooted vegetables (long carrots, parsnips), opt for the large 120x120 model, which offers the greatest surface area.
Do drainage holes need to be drilled in the base?
This raised bed is open at the bottom — there is no base. Water drains naturally into the ground. On an impermeable slab, place a 5 cm layer of gravel at the bottom before adding soil to ensure drainage.
