Its external dimensions are 104x54xH 90 cm with an internal volume of 96 litres (internal dimensions: 95x46xH 22 cm). Installation advice
Place the planter on a stable, level surface. On a wooden terrace, insert plastic shims under the feet to prevent moisture building up beneath the structure. Fill with a mixture of light topsoil + compost + perlite (50/40/10) to limit the total weight — a full filling to 96 litres represents approximately 70 to 80 kg depending on the growing medium. Check the load capacity of your terrace before filling completely.
Care and protection
Untreated Douglas fir naturally turns grey over 6 to 12 months. This greying is purely aesthetic and does not affect the wood's resistance. To preserve the original colour, apply an outdoor Douglas fir wood saturator every spring. Clean the feet after each season to remove soil deposits. In winter, if the planter stays outside, overwintering it empty reduces the risk of the wood cracking under the effect of frost.
Frequently asked questions
Is this planter suitable for growing tomatoes or courgettes?
Yes for cherry tomatoes and compact varieties. The internal depth of 22 cm is sufficient for herbs, lettuces and small tomatoes. For tall-stemmed tomatoes or courgettes, a depth greater than 30 cm would be more suitable.
Can this planter be left outside in winter?
Yes, Douglas fir is frost-resistant. For optimal longevity, partially empty the growing medium at the end of the season and cover with a breathable tarpaulin in very cold weather. Overwintering empty in a sheltered spot is recommended if the planter is very exposed to the north.
What is the total weight once filled?
The empty structure weighs approximately 20 kg. A full filling to 96 litres adds 70 to 80 kg depending on the growing medium. Plan to fill the planter directly in its final position.
Is untreated wood suitable for food crops?
Yes. Untreated Douglas fir contains no chemical products that could migrate into the soil. This is one of the reasons it is recommended for food-growing vegetable beds.
Are drainage holes needed in the base?
The structure is open between the base boards, which provides natural ventilation and drainage. On an impermeable terrace, add a layer of gravel 3 to 5 cm deep before the growing medium to speed up the drainage of excess water.
