Fill it with a mix of light topsoil + compost + perlite (50/40/10) to limit the total weight – a full 96-litre planter weighs approximately 70 to 80 kg more, depending on the growing medium. Check your decking’s load capacity before filling it completely.

Care and protection

Untreated Douglas fir naturally turns grey within 6 to 12 months. This change is purely cosmetic and does not affect the strength of the wood. To preserve its original colour, apply an exterior wood oil for Douglas fir each spring. Clean soil deposits from the legs after each season. If the planter stays outdoors in winter, leaving it empty reduces the risk of the wood cracking in freezing conditions.
