  • Natural durability class 3: resistance to fungi and insects
  • Kit: on-site assembly, delivered in a compact parcel

Installation tips

Assemble the composter following the instructions provided. Place it directly on permeable ground (soil, lawn) — contact with natural ground encourages the activity of micro-organisms and earthworms which speed up decomposition. Avoid impermeable surfaces (concrete, tiles) unless you add a layer of soil at the bottom. Position the composter in partial shade to prevent organic matter from drying out in direct sunlight. Allow easy access from the kitchen or vegetable garden for daily additions.

Maintenance and protection

Douglas fir turns grey outdoors within 6 to 12 months — this is normal and does not affect its resistance. No chemical treatment is recommended on a composter so as not to disturb micro-organisms. Check the joints and hatches annually. At the end of the season, harvest the mature compost through the bottom hatch before the first frosts to make spring use easier.

Frequently asked questions

What waste can be put in this composter?

Vegetable and fruit peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags, eggshells, grass clippings, dead leaves, small twigs, shredded cardboard. Avoid meat, dairy products, diseased plants and large quantities of citrus fruit.

How long does it take to obtain mature compost?

Between 3 and 6 months depending on the season, the mix of materials and the turning frequency. In summer with alternating brown matter (cardboard, leaves) and green matter (peelings, grass clippings), 3 months is generally sufficient.

Can this composter be used on a terrace without permeable ground?

Yes, by adding a 10 cm layer of soil or mature compost at the bottom to inoculate the necessary micro-organisms. Moisture will need to be managed manually (light watering in very dry weather).

Is untreated Douglas fir truly resistant in a damp composter?

Yes. Douglas fir has a natural durability class 3, allowing it to withstand permanent moisture for several years. This is one of the reasons it is commonly used for composters and organic raised garden beds.

How do you avoid bad smells in this composter?

Balance your inputs: for every 1 volume of green matter (wet), add 2 volumes of brown matter (dry). Turn the contents every 15 days to aerate the material. A well-balanced compost smells like earth, not rubbish.
