Installation tips
Assemble on a flat, level surface. For this large format, plan for a central support under the long cross-rail to prevent deflection under the weight of the soil. On loose ground, lightly anchor the corners with stakes to prevent any movement. Fill in 10 cm layers, compacting between each layer — a full fill to 20 cm represents approximately 350 to 400 kg of substrate.
Maintenance and protection
Douglas fir turns grey in 6 to 12 months without any loss of strength. Apply an outdoor oil or wood stain once a year to maintain the colour. The no-fixing assembly system makes it easy to dismantle at the end of the season for winter storage. Check that the module is level each spring before filling.
WoodUp Tip
Good to know before buying: the nail-free, screw-free assembly requires a level surface for the boards to interlock correctly. For the 2 m² growing surface at 20 cm height (approximately 400 litres), allow between 200 and 440 kg depending on the mix used (light dry compost, moist compost/soil mix, or garden soil): plan to spread the filling over several stages. Extendable with 200x100 extension kits (ID 1108).
Frequently asked questions
Can this raised bed be installed directly on grass?
Yes. On grass, the vegetation beneath the raised bed will die naturally from lack of light. A geotextile membrane placed at the bottom before filling prevents unwanted weeds from growing back while allowing water to drain.
Are additional supports needed for a 200 cm raised bed?
To prevent deflection of the long cross-rail under the pressure of the soil, place a brick or a support block at the centre of each long side. This reinforcement is optional but recommended for fills greater than 15 cm.
Can this 200x100 raised bed be combined with a 100x100 model?
Yes, the two formats are independent and can be placed side by side. The interlocking systems are compatible with their respective extensions but are not interchangeable between formats.
Is untreated Douglas fir truly compatible with edible crops?
Yes. Untreated Douglas fir contains no chemical preservatives. It is commonly used in organic vegetable gardens in France. Only the gradual greying is to be anticipated.
What soil depth is suitable for tomatoes in this raised bed?
Tomatoes need at least 30 cm of depth. Add one extension kit to reach 30 cm (base + 1 extension). For particularly vigorous varieties, 40 cm (base + 2 extensions) is recommended.
