How to choose the right folding loft ladder
The NEGGIA sits between space-saving models, which are limited to 265 cm ceiling heights, and standard loft ladders, which require a frame at least 110 cm long. It takes up 135 cm of floor space and requires 146 cm of clearance.
Its 26 mm hatch provides little insulation: reserve it for a loft used for storage. For a 120 x 80 cm opening, you will need to reduce the opening or choose a longer model, such as the CHALANCON.
Installation advice
Loft opening: prepare an opening to suit the chosen frame, allowing around 5 mm of clearance all round. Check that there is at least 135 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.
Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmers) with screws suitable for the substrate, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.
Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the last section so that it rests flat on the floor. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridges.
Care and protection
Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between ladder sections and make sure the hatch-opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if the hatch becomes difficult to open, and dust the treads.
The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which provides an airtight fit.
Frequently asked questions
What is a compact folding loft ladder?
This ladder has a shorter-than-average frame for a smaller loft opening. The NEGGIA 26 fits into a frame just 100 cm long, yet suits ceiling heights up to 280 cm.
Which folding loft ladder suits a 120 x 80 cm opening?
No frame in our range is 80 cm wide; the maximum is 70 cm. Reduce the opening with a trimmer, then choose a 120 x 70 cm frame, such as the CHALANCON or BLUFFY.
How much floor space is needed to unfold the NEGGIA?
Allow 135 cm of floor space and 146 cm of clearance to open the hatch and unfold the ladder.
How do you choose the frame size for a folding loft ladder?
Choose the frame size to suit the loft opening: its dimensions correspond to the opening needed in the ceiling, with a clearance of around 5 mm all round for installation. Measure the existing opening, or the one you can create between the joists, then choose the largest frame that will fit without exceeding its dimensions.
Do you need to trim a folding loft ladder to length?
Yes, usually. The ladder is supplied for the maximum ceiling height and is trimmed at the bottom so that its last section rests flat on the floor. Measure the ceiling height, unfold the ladder and cut it according to the instructions.
