The BLUFFY 46 is a loft ladder with metal side rails and wooden steps that supports 210 kg. Its 46 mm hatch, including 40 mm of insulation, limits heat loss into the loft.

It comes in 12 frame sizes, from 110 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm, for ceiling heights up to 280 cm. The 40 cm-wide ladder has 12 steps. A handrail is included, except with 55 cm-wide frames.

Choosing the right loft ladder

The 210 kg load capacity makes a difference when carrying boxes, suitcases or equipment upstairs. All-wood models of the same format have a 160 kg limit.

If a handrail matters to you, choose a 60 or 70 cm-wide frame. For uninsulated lofts, the BLUFFY 86 mm version provides more insulation with the same load capacity.

Installation advice

Ceiling opening: prepare an opening to fit your chosen frame, allowing approximately 5 mm around the perimeter. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmers) with screws suited to the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the final section so it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridging.

Care and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, the joints between the ladder sections are sound and the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if the hatch becomes difficult to open, and dust the steps.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which provides the airtight seal.
