Installation advice
This banister can be fixed on the wall side (with wall bracket) or on the open side depending on the configuration. For wall fixing, use handrail brackets suited to your surface (concrete, brick, wood) and ensure a solid anchor. The minimum height of 90 cm from the nosing must be observed.
Apply the finish before final fixing to treat areas that will be inaccessible after assembly. For visual consistency, use the same finish as the SUCHET staircase and the first banister if it is already installed.
Maintenance and protection
The wood is delivered raw and untreated. Apply a protective finish before intensive use — satin varnish (2 coats), oil-wax, or polyurethane varnish depending on the desired look. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, benefits particularly from an abrasion-resistant varnish.
Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish is sufficient to preserve the appearance of the wood. Avoid abrasive products or solvent-based cleaners that damage finishes.
Frequently asked questions
Is it compulsory to have a banister on both sides of an interior staircase?
French regulations for private interior staircases do not strictly require a banister on both sides, but recommend one on at least one side. For staircases wider than 1.20 m, a handrail on both sides is often advised for safety, particularly for elderly people or those with reduced mobility.
Can this banister be used with other straight WoodUp staircases?
This banister is sized for the SUCHET staircase. It can be adapted to other straight staircases in the range (MORENO, CHEVALARD, etc.) if the dimensions are compatible. Check the handrail length and post heights against your staircase before ordering.
How do you fix a wall-side banister without a newel post?
Use wall-mounted handrail brackets (end brackets and intermediate brackets) screwed into the wall. Allow one bracket every 80 to 100 cm for a solid hold. Brackets must be fixed into the load-bearing wall with appropriate anchors, never into plaster alone. A start bracket and an end bracket angled to match the staircase pitch complete the installation.
Is fir suitable for a frequently used interior banister?
Fir is suitable for normal family use with a good finish. It is a softer wood than beech or oak — it may mark slightly under very intensive use. To maximise durability, apply 2 coats of abrasion-resistant satin varnish and reapply every 5–8 years depending on wear.
Is the supplied hardware suitable for fixing into concrete?
The supplied hardware is intended for assembling the banister components together. For fixing into concrete, walls, or steps, use appropriate anchors and screws for the material (hammer-in anchors for concrete, expansion anchors for breeze blocks). Wall fixings are generally not included in the kit.
What is the difference between this additional banister and the main banister of the SUCHET staircase?
The main banister of the SUCHET staircase is generally included or ordered with the staircase — it secures the open side. This additional banister is designed for the second side (wall side or opposite open side), allowing a handrail on both sides for greater safety, particularly for elderly people or those with reduced mobility.
