Installation advice
Exterior treatment is mandatory before installation – apply 2 to 3 coats of wood stain or saturating oil to all faces. The straight-cut spindles (not angle-cut) adapt to the staircase inclination by rotating freely in their housing – check the tightening after adjusting the angle. Fix the handrail securely to the wall side using supports suited to your substrate (concrete, brick, wood).
The minimum regulatory height for an exterior handrail is 90 cm measured vertically from the nosing – check compliance before works are signed off. Two people are recommended for installation.
Maintenance and protection
The glued laminated wood is delivered raw without treatment. Apply 2 to 3 coats of exterior wood stain, oil or saturating oil to all faces (including edges) before installation or upon receipt. Without treatment, the wood deteriorates rapidly outdoors when exposed to the elements.
Renew the protection every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure (south-facing sides and very rainy areas require more frequent maintenance). Inspect fixings annually and tighten if necessary. A scrub brush and soapy water (pH neutral) at the start of the season is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the TRAVILLARGUE handrail and an angle-cut spindle handrail?
Angle-cut spindles are precisely cut for a given angle and cannot be reused on a different staircase. The TRAVILLARGUE spindles are straight and adapt to any angle by rotation, which simplifies installation and allows the handrail to be reused if the staircase changes. In return, the final appearance may be slightly different from traditional angle-cut spindle handrails.
Is the TRAVILLARGUE handrail suitable for an interior staircase?
The TRAVILLARGUE is designed for outdoor use – its straight-cut spindle system (not angle-cut) is particularly suited to exterior staircases (miller's stairs, terrace access, etc.). For an interior staircase, the PENDEDIS, MOLEDE or GAVIA handrails offer sections and heights specifically dimensioned for indoor staircases.
Is glued laminated beech suitable for outdoor use?
Glued laminated beech is not naturally resistant outdoors – it is classified for interior use in its raw state. For outdoor use, an exterior wood stain or saturating oil applied to all faces before installation is essential, with renewal every 2–3 years. Fir has the same characteristics. For a highly exposed staircase, douglas fir or larch would be more naturally suitable.
Can the TRAVILLARGUE handrail be cut down if it is too long?
Yes, the handrail and spindles can be cut to length with a saw. Always cut the ends at an angle matching the staircase inclination for a clean finish and good hold on the start and end fixings.
Is the hardware included in the TRAVILLARGUE kit?
The kit includes the handrail and 18 spindles. Wall fixing hardware is not specified – check the exact contents upon receipt and plan for handrail brackets suited to your wall substrate (concrete, brick, wood) depending on your configuration.
