SUCHET Straight Staircase - Solid Fir, 280 cm, 13 Steps

The SUCHET straight staircase in solid fir is a staircase kit for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 steps. Its width is 80 cm excluding handrail (82 cm with handrail) with a floor footprint of 229 cm — more compact than a standard 14-step staircase. The recommended stairwell opening is 229x85 cm. The step rise is 20 cm for a tread depth of 16.8 cm — tread depth shorter than the Standard range, to be taken into account for climbing comfort.

The steps have a 200x28 mm section with risers. The fir is supplied unfinished — a protective finish must be applied before first use. Available with or without risers and handrail. Delivered in 2 packages.

Key points

  • Compact footprint: only 229 cm for a 280 cm height — 44 cm less than a standard 14-step staircase
  • Tread depth 16.8 cm: shorter than the Standard range (19 cm) — steeper staircase, to be checked depending on users
  • 13 steps: 20 cm step rise compliant, reduced number of steps thanks to the compact design
  • Handrail can be added afterwards: reversible left or right, fixings included
  • Raw fir: protective finish required before use
  • 2 packages: easier handling in restricted access areas

Installation advice

Check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm maximum) and the stairwell opening (229x85 cm recommended) before unpacking. These measurements apply to finished floor and ceiling surfaces. The tread depth of 16.8 cm is shorter than a standard staircase (19 cm) — verify that this size suits regular users before ordering.

Assemble the stringers, steps and risers according to the instructions. Fix to the floor and upper support with fixings appropriate to the material. Two people are recommended for positioning the stringers. The handrail can be added after assembly.

Care and protection

Apply a protective finish before first use. For fir, a 2-coat staircase varnish provides good protection (renewal every 5–7 years). An oil-wax product is suitable for moderate use. Cleaning: slightly damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp Tip

The SUCHET is a compact straight staircase: its footprint of 229 cm makes it attractive when there is not enough space for a 14-step staircase (259–273 cm). However, its tread depth of 16.8 cm is shorter than the comfortable standard (19 cm minimum recommended). Before ordering, check that this tread depth suits your users — for young children or people with reduced mobility, a larger tread depth is preferable.

What to know before buying: the reduced tread depth means the foot extends slightly beyond the front of the step when descending. This is normal for compact staircases, but it is important to be aware of it and to descend facing the staircase for less agile users.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the SUCHET have 13 steps instead of 14?

For a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 steps, the step rise is 280/14 = 20 cm (counting the landing step). With 14 regular steps, the same result is obtained but with a wider tread depth. The SUCHET reduces its footprint by keeping 13 steps and adopting a tread depth of 16.8 cm — which saves 30 cm of floor footprint compared to a 14-step staircase with a 19 cm tread depth.

Is a tread depth of 16.8 cm sufficient for everyday use?

A tread depth of 16.8 cm is functional for an agile adult who uses the staircase frequently — the foot quickly adapts to the size. For children under 8, elderly people, or people with reduced mobility, a tread depth of 19 cm or more is safer. Descending is the most sensitive moment — going down facing the staircase (as on a ladder) is safer with a short tread depth.

Which staircase should I choose if my floor footprint is limited to 230 cm?

The SUCHET (229 cm footprint) is the most compact straight staircase in the WoodUp range for a 280 cm height. If even 229 cm is too much, loft staircases (AULAC, BASSEYRE) or alternating-tread staircases (NUGERE) offer an even smaller footprint, at the cost of a steeper pitch.

Can the SUCHET be cut down?

Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be cut down according to the cutting chart in the instructions. Cutting down the stringers modifies the height of the first step. For a height of 260 cm, the cut is approximately 20 cm on the stringers.

What is the difference between the SUCHET and the MORENO?

The MORENO has 15 steps for 285 cm with a tread depth of 18.3 cm and a footprint of 273 cm. The SUCHET has 13 steps for 280 cm with a tread depth of 16.8 cm and a footprint of 229 cm. The SUCHET is more compact but steeper. The MORENO is more comfortable but requires more floor space.

Should fir be treated before or after installation?

The finish should be applied after the complete installation of the staircase and handrail. Hidden surfaces (undersides of steps, inner faces of stringers) can be treated before assembly for complete protection. Do not postpone the finish until after first use — raw fir quickly absorbs dirt.
