CEIGNE Bottom Quarter-Turn Staircase - Solid Fir, 280 cm, Handrail Included

The CEIGNE bottom quarter-turn staircase in solid fir is delivered as a complete kit with handrail included. Its bottom quarter-turn configuration places the 90° turn at the bottom of the flight, with a footprint of only 256 cm — among the most compact in the quarter-turn range. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 steps, it offers a going of 17 cm and a total width of 82 cm including the handrail. The recommended stairwell opening is 85x256 cm.

Available with or without risers — tread section varies depending on version: 200x28 mm with risers / 200x32 mm without risers. Delivered in 3 parcels. The included handrail is to be fitted during stair installation. The fir is delivered raw — a finish is mandatory before use.

  • Going 17 cm: shorter than the Standard range (19 cm) — compact staircase, to be checked according to users
  • Different sections: 200x28 mm with risers / 200x32 mm without — definitive choice at order
  • 3 parcels: easier handling in confined spaces
  • Trimmable: can be adapted to floor-to-floor heights below 280 cm

Installation advice

Check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm maximum) and the stairwell opening (85x256 cm minimum) before unpacking. Determine the quarter-turn direction before ordering — a definitive choice that cannot be changed. The handrail is included and must be fitted during stair installation. Assemble according to the instructions, fix securely to the floor and upper support. Two people recommended for handling.

Apply the finish after complete installation, including the handrail. Do not use the staircase before applying the protective finish.

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir must receive a protective finish before first use. A 2-coat stair varnish offers the best protection for family use (renewal every 5–7 years). For light use, an oil-wax is sufficient. Regular cleaning: slightly damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp Advice

The CEIGNE is the most compact bottom quarter-turn solution in the fir range, with a footprint of 256 cm compared to 282 cm for the BROSSES or MOLEDE. This 26 cm advantage can make a difference when the room is short. The trade-off: the going of 17 cm is shorter than other bottom quarter-turns (19 cm) — the climb is slightly steeper. This should be assessed according to the regular users of the staircase.

Important before purchasing: the handrail is included and must be fitted during assembly. The quarter-turn direction (right or left) must be specified at the time of order and cannot be changed after delivery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the CEIGNE and the BROSSES bottom quarter-turn?

The CEIGNE has a footprint of 256 cm with a going of 17 cm — more compact but steeper. The BROSSES has a footprint of 282 cm with a going of 19 cm — more comfortable but requires more space. The CEIGNE is the right choice when space requires a footprint of less than 260 cm. The BROSSES is suitable when space allows and climbing comfort is the priority.

Is a going of 17 cm sufficient for everyday use?

A going of 17 cm is functional for agile adults who quickly get used to the dimensions. For children under 10, elderly people, or those with reduced mobility, a larger going (19 cm minimum) is recommended for greater safety, particularly when descending. The staircase is self-supporting — it can be fixed at the top and bottom only, without wall anchoring, if the instructions indicate this.

Can the handrail direction be chosen independently of the stair direction?

No. On the CEIGNE bottom quarter-turn, the handrail is linked to the staircase structure. The handrail direction follows the quarter-turn direction. The staircase + handrail assembly is ordered in one direction — right or left.

What is the minimum stairwell opening required to install the CEIGNE?

The minimum recommended stairwell opening is 85 cm wide by 256 cm long. These dimensions apply to the finished opening, including any cladding. An 80 cm wide opening is not sufficient — the total width including handrail is 82 cm.

Can the CEIGNE be trimmed?

Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be cut according to the chart in the instructions. For a height of 260 cm, the cut is approximately 20 cm. The height of the first step is slightly modified as a result.

Why does the section vary between the version with and without risers?

The section changes from 200x28 mm (with risers) to 200x32 mm (without risers). In the closed version, the risers stiffen the structure and allow the use of a 28 mm tread. In the open version without risers, the thicker tread (32 mm) compensates for the absence of rigidity provided by the risers.
