Made-to-measure wooden spindle balustrade in glued laminated fir, beech or oak
This made-to-measure wooden balustrade helps make an indoor landing, mezzanine or straight staircase safer. The posts, spindles, handrail and bottom rail are made from glued laminated solid timber, in your choice of one wood species throughout: fir, beech or oak. The bonded strips help limit warping and twisting of the components over time.
The infill consists of 65 x 20 mm flat spindles, fitted vertically between a 50 x 35 mm bottom rail and a 50 x 50 mm handrail. 70 x 70 mm posts frame each section. Spindle spacing does not exceed 11 cm and the height is 1 m; both dimensions meet the requirements of NF P01-012.
The balustrade is made to your dimensions using the WoodUp configurator, then supplied unfinished, as a kit, with instructions and assembly screws. Allow 8 to 10 weeks for manufacture. It is for indoor use only.

Choosing the right wood species
Fir has a light colour that suits chalet-style or country interiors and is the most affordable option. Beech has a fine, even grain that takes paint or lacquer well. Oak has a pronounced grain that can be brought out with oil or clear varnish.
This model is designed for straight runs: landings, mezzanines or straight staircases. It is not suitable for spiral or winder staircases, which require bespoke manufacture. It is not intended for outdoor use.
Installation advice
Measure accurately before configuring: the balustrade is made to the dimensions you order, so a measuring error will require it to be made again. For a staircase, measure the horizontal projected length, not the sloping length.
Apply the finish before assembly: this is the only time all sides of the spindles and the joint areas are accessible. With beech and oak, pre-drilling is essential before inserting each screw to prevent splitting.
The posts must be anchored to a strong supporting structure, such as a concrete slab, floor joists or a stair stringer. Floor fixing plates are not included, and the anchors must be suitable for the supporting structure. Compliance of the finished installation depends as much on the quality of this anchoring as on the balustrade’s dimensions.
Care and protection
The timber is supplied unfinished: a protective finish is needed before use, particularly on the handrail, which is subject to daily wear. Several options are available:
- Floor varnish: 2 to 3 coats; recommended for areas subject to frequent use.
- Hardwax oil: a natural matt appearance; reapply according to wear on the handrail.
- Paint or lacquer: well suited to beech for a coloured balustrade.
Clean with soapy water and a well-wrung-out cloth. Check that the joints and fixings are tight once a year.
Frequently asked questions
Does this wooden balustrade comply with NF P01-012?
Its height of 1 m and maximum spindle spacing of 11 cm meet the requirements of NF P01-012. Compliance of the finished installation also depends on how it is fitted: the posts must be fixed to a strong supporting structure, following the instructions supplied.
Can this wooden balustrade be installed outdoors?
No, this balustrade is for indoor use only. The untreated fir, beech and glued laminated oak are not intended for exposure to the weather. For a terrace or balcony, choose a model designed for outdoor use.
What is the handrail’s cross-section?
This model has a 50 x 50 mm square handrail in the same wood species as the rest of the balustrade. If you prefer a round handrail, for example along a wall, explore our range of wooden handrails sold separately.
Which wood species should I choose for a mezzanine balustrade?
The choice mainly depends on the style and finish you want. Fir suits chalet-style or country interiors, beech works well for a painted balustrade, and oak suits interiors where you want to show off the wood grain. All three are glued laminated solid timber and have the same cross-sections and 1 m height.
Is the balustrade supplied painted or unfinished?
The balustrade is supplied unfinished and untreated. Apply your chosen finish before assembly, while all sides of the spindles are still accessible: floor varnish, hardwax oil, paint or lacquer.
How does this differ from a standard WoodUp balustrade kit?
The standard kits (2 m fir balustrade kit + 1 post, 1 m fir balustrade kit without post, 2 m beech balustrade kit + 2 posts) come in fixed lengths of 1 m or 2 m and are available from stock. The made-to-measure model can be produced in any length, such as 1.35 m or 3.20 m, with a manufacturing lead time of 8 to 10 weeks.
