Douglas wood door canopy kit - PILON
The PILON Douglas canopy kit is the solid Douglas version of the fir PILON kit. It includes the same structural components - straight brackets, purlins, rafters and screws - in a naturally more moisture-resistant species. Douglas, rated use class 3 without treatment, can be installed outdoors above direct ground contact without mandatory protection. It is available in three depths: 80, 100 or 120 cm.
Douglas differs from fir through its natural durability: without treatment, it gradually weathers to grey in 6 to 12 months while retaining its structural properties. With a saturator applied before fitting and renewed every 2 to 3 years, it retains its golden-brown colour. It is the recommended choice for facades highly exposed to the elements or to minimise long-term maintenance.

Installation advice
Same procedure as the fir PILON: fix to a load-bearing wall in solid masonry, with fixings suited to the substrate (not supplied). Pre-drill before screwing. Fit purlins then rafters checking alignment and pitch. Estimated assembly time: 3 to 5 hours with two people.
Even raw, Douglas can be installed without prior protection. If you wish to preserve its golden colour, apply an exterior wood saturator before installation. If you prefer to let it weather naturally to grey, no surface preparation is required.
Maintenance and protection
Without treatment, Douglas weathers naturally to grey in 6 to 12 months - a stable silvery patina that does not affect the structural strength of the wood. To preserve the original colour, apply a saturator in two coats before fitting and renew every 2 to 3 years. An annual rinse with clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Does Douglas need to be treated before installation?
No, treatment is not mandatory. Douglas naturally resists moisture outdoors above ground contact (use class 3). Without protection, it weathers to grey in 6 to 12 months - a stable silvery-grey colour. With a saturator applied before fitting and renewed every 2 to 3 years, it retains its natural golden-brown colour.
What is the difference between the PILON Douglas and the PILON Fir?
Identical structure and dimensions. Douglas is naturally more resistant to moisture - no mandatory treatment, reduced maintenance, longer service life when exposed outdoors. Fir is less expensive but requires treatment before installation and renewal every 2 to 3 years. Douglas is recommended for highly exposed facades or if you wish to minimise maintenance.
Which depth should I choose?
100 cm for standard protection in front of a front door. 120 cm for highly exposed facades (west, north, Atlantic coast) or if the door is set well back into the facade. 80 cm for sheltered entrances or configurations where the overhang is architecturally constrained.
Can tiles be fitted to this kit?
Yes. The 145x45 mm purlins and 45x30 mm rafters are dimensioned to receive mechanical tiles or slates. Tiles are not included. Check the compatibility of your bracket pitch with the chosen tile type before purchase.
Does Douglas really weather to grey without affecting its resistance?
Yes. Weathering is a surface reaction caused by UV - it does not affect the structural properties of the wood. The heartwood of Douglas, responsible for its natural resistance, remains intact. Studies under outdoor conditions show a durability of 20 to 30 years above ground for untreated Douglas.
Is the kit width fixed or custom?
The width is to be specified at the time of order, as with the fir PILON. For very specific dimensions, also consult our custom canopy available in fir or Douglas from 200 cm in length.
