Pilon Fir Canopy Kit – Timber Structure for Entrances, 3 Available Depths

The Pilon canopy kit is a solid fir porch canopy structure designed to protect home entrances from the elements. It includes all the structural components needed to build a canopy: straight brackets, purlins, rafters and fixing screws. Three configurations are available, suited to depths of 80, 100 or 120 cm.

The solid fir used is supplied raw, without any surface treatment. A water-repellent and UV-resistant treatment applied before installation is essential for any outdoor use. Without treatment, the wood exposes its grain to moisture variations and solar radiation, which can cause cracking and accelerated deterioration of the structure.

This kit is suitable for flat masonry or concrete façades. The straight brackets fix directly into the load-bearing wall. The bracket cross-sections vary according to the chosen depth: the deeper the canopy, the larger the cross-sections, sized accordingly to ensure the rigidity of the assembly. The screws provided are calibrated for assembling the components together — wall anchors and fixing screws must be sourced separately.

Kit contents

  • 2 straight brackets (cross-sections according to chosen depth)
  • 2 purlins with 145×45 mm cross-section
  • Rafters with 70×40 mm cross-section
  • Assembly screws included

Key points

  • Complete assembly kit: all structural components supplied; wall fixings and cladding are to be added according to the project
  • 3 available depths: 80, 100 or 120 cm to suit different entrance widths
  • Dimensioned structure: bracket cross-sections adapted to each depth to maintain the rigidity of the assembly
  • Wall installation: straight brackets compatible with masonry or concrete walls; wall fixings to be provided separately
  • Treatment required: raw fir requires water-repellent protection before outdoor installation
  • Customisable: bare structure allowing the covering to be adapted (timber boards, polycarbonate, zinc) according to requirements

Installation advice

Preparation: check that the fixing façade is flat, load-bearing and free from cracks. Identify the anchor points, avoiding any severely deteriorated mortar joints. Treat all timber components with an exterior wood stain or saturator before any installation work — apply 2 to 3 coats, allowing 24 hours drying time between each coat. Never install raw fir timber outdoors without protection.

Assembling the structure: begin by fixing the two straight brackets to the wall, leaving a spacing suited to the width of your entrance. Use heavy-duty expansion anchors (not included) sized for the substrate. Then place the 145×45 mm purlins resting on the brackets, and fix the 70×40 mm rafters perpendicularly. Check the level and plumb at each step. A slight forward slope (2 to 5%) is recommended for rainwater run-off.

Covering: the structure is supplied without cladding. Provide a covering suited to your exposure: treated timber boards, polycarbonate sheets or steel trays according to the desired aesthetic. Assembling this kit requires two people to fit the purlins and align the brackets. Estimated time: 3 to 4 hours for an experienced installer.

Maintenance and protection

Fir is a natural durability class 2 timber, with low resistance to permanent moisture without protection. When used outdoors, renewing the surface treatment is essential to maintain the integrity of the structure over time.

Routine maintenance: clean the structure 1 to 2 times per year with a slightly damp cloth or a soft brush. Avoid using pressure washers on bare wood, as they open the grain and weaken the surface.

Renewing the protection: depending on the product initially applied:

  • Exterior wood stain: renewal every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure
  • Resinous wood saturator: renewal every 1 to 2 years
  • Microporous paint: longer durability (5 to 8 years), light sanding before recoating

Inspect the contact areas between the timber and the metal components (brackets, screws) each year, as well as the purlin end sections, which are more exposed to capillary moisture. Targeted touch-ups in these areas significantly extend the service life of the structure.

Frequently asked questions

Are wall fixings included in the Pilon canopy kit?

No, the screws provided cover only the assembly of the components together (purlins, rafters, brackets). Wall anchors and fixing screws must be sourced separately, suited to the nature of your substrate (concrete, breeze block, solid brick). For a hollow wall or a dry-lined wall, professional advice is recommended before proceeding.

Should the timber be treated before or after installation?

Treatment must be applied before installation without exception. Once the structure is assembled, certain areas (purlin ends, bracket bearing faces) become difficult to access. Apply 2 to 3 coats of exterior wood stain to all faces, paying particular attention to cut ends. Allow to dry completely before assembly.

What depth of canopy should I choose for a standard front door?

For a standard front door (90 to 100 cm wide), the 60×60 cm (100 cm depth) configuration provides adequate protection against frontal rain. If your entrance is exposed to side winds or you also wish to protect the base of the door, the 80×80 cm (120 cm depth) configuration is more appropriate. The 80 cm depth is better suited to decorative canopies or well-sheltered entrances.

Does the kit include the canopy cladding?

No. This kit provides only the load-bearing structure: brackets, purlins, rafters and assembly screws. The cladding (timber boards, polycarbonate sheets, steel trays, slates) must be chosen and fitted separately according to the desired aesthetic and the required level of waterproofing. This modular design allows the cladding to be freely adapted to the style of the façade.

Can this kit be installed on a timber or cladded façade?

Installation on timber cladding is possible provided it is fixed to a solid load-bearing frame. The brackets must be anchored into the frame uprights or into the masonry structure behind the cladding — never into the cladding alone. In this case, locate the load-bearing uprights precisely before drilling. If in doubt about the load-bearing capacity, consult a carpenter or qualified installer.

What is the service life of a treated fir canopy?

With careful initial treatment and regular maintenance (every 2 to 3 years), a properly protected fir structure can last 15 to 20 years outdoors under a sheltered canopy. Without renewing the treatment, deterioration (cracking, end rot) may appear within 5 to 8 years depending on local climatic conditions. The most exposed areas (end sections, bracket supports) require particular attention during annual inspections.
