Fir wood canopy kit for front door - PILON
The PILON canopy kit is a structure in raw solid fir designed to shelter a front door from the elements. It brings together all the structural components - right-angle brackets, purlins, rafters and fixings - ready to assemble and fix to the facade. Three depths are available: 80, 100 or 120 cm, to suit the desired level of protection and facade exposure.
The 70x40 mm section rafters are more generous than on entry-level models (typically 45x30 mm), which gives the structure increased rigidity, useful for heavy tile roof coverings. The wood is supplied raw - a water-repellent treatment before installation is essential for any outdoor use. Tiles and wall fixing plugs are to be sourced separately.

Installation advice
Fix the brackets to a solid masonry load-bearing wall. Choose fixings appropriate for the substrate (expansion plugs for concrete, chemical anchors for hollow brick) - not included. Always pre-drill before screwing. Fit the purlins then the rafters, checking alignment and pitch before final tightening.
Apply the protective treatment (wood stain or saturator) to all faces before assembly to treat surfaces that will be inaccessible after fitting. Assembly estimated at 3 to 5 hours with two people.
Maintenance and protection
Raw fir requires treatment before installation: microporous wood stain or saturator in a minimum of two coats. Renew every 2 to 3 years on accessible faces. Under a tile roof covering, the upper faces of the rafters are protected from direct rain - concentrate maintenance on the lower faces and the brackets.
Frequently asked questions
What depth should I choose for my entrance canopy?
A depth of 100 cm covers the standard area in front of a front door. For facades exposed to driving rain (west-facing facade, Atlantic regions), opt for 120 cm. The 80 cm depth is suitable for sheltered entrances or where an existing porch is present. If in doubt, choose the greater depth.
Why are the PILON rafters thicker than on other kits?
The 70x40 mm section rafters offer superior bending resistance compared to the 45x30 mm rafters commonly used. This allows heavier roof coverings (mechanical tiles, natural slates) to be supported over longer spans without risk of excessive deflection. This is an advantage if you plan a clay tile roof covering.
Can tiles be laid on this canopy kit?
Yes. The structure is sized to accommodate mechanical tiles or slates. Check the pitch of your brackets against the minimum pitch required by your tile type. Tiles are not included in the kit.
Is wood treatment really compulsory?
Yes. Fir is a class 2 use timber by nature - without treatment, it deteriorates quickly outdoors under the effect of moisture. A microporous wood stain or saturator applied before installation and renewed every 2 to 3 years ensures a service life of 15 to 20 years under a roof covering.
Is the kit width fixed or made to measure?
The width is to be specified at the time of ordering. Unlike the BANTARDE and UGLAS models whose width is fixed at 300 cm, the PILON can be adapted to the desired width. For very specific dimensions, also consult our made-to-measure canopy.
What is the difference between the PILON FIR and the PILON DOUGLAS?
The structure and dimensions are identical. The difference is the species: fir must be treated before installation and maintenance must be renewed every 2 to 3 years. Douglas is naturally more resistant to moisture - treatment not required, natural greying without deterioration. Douglas is recommended for highly exposed facades or if you wish to minimise maintenance.
