Douglas wood door canopy kit - PILON 3 depths
Solid Douglas fir door canopy kit, with 4 lengths: 150, 200, 250 or 300 cm and 3 depths: 80, 100 or 120 cm. More resistant than fir, Douglas fir may contain sapwood: apply a finish before installation. Straight brackets sized according to depth (45x45, 60x60 or 80x80 cm), 145x45 mm beams and screws included. Length refers to the beams; the brackets can be positioned closer together for a narrower door. Tiles and wall plugs not included. Made in France.
Douglas wood door canopy kit - PILON
The PILON Douglas fir canopy kit is the solid Douglas fir version of the PILON fir kit. It contains the same structural components — straight brackets, beams, rafters and screws — in a wood species more resistant to moisture than fir. It is available in four lengths, 150, 200, 250 or 300 cm, and three depths: 80, 100 or 120 cm.
More resistant than fir, Douglas fir may nevertheless contain sapwood, which is less durable than the heartwood. Apply a finish (wood stain or wood saturator) before installation and renew it every 2 to 3 years. A wood saturator also preserves its golden-brown colour. This is the recommended choice for façades highly exposed to the weather.

Installation advice
Same procedure as the fir PILON: fix to a load-bearing wall in solid masonry, with fixings suited to the substrate (not supplied). Pre-drill before screwing. Fit purlins then rafters checking alignment and pitch. Estimated assembly time: 3 to 5 hours with two people.
Apply wood stain or an outdoor wood saturator to every surface before installation: Douglas fir may contain sapwood, which is less durable than the heartwood.
Maintenance and protection
Douglas fir may contain sapwood, which is less durable than the heartwood. Apply two coats of wood saturator before installation and renew every 2 to 3 years. Cleaning once a year with clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Does Douglas need to be treated before installation?
Yes. Douglas fir resists moisture better than fir, but it may contain sapwood, which is less durable than the heartwood. Apply wood stain or a wood saturator to every surface before installation, then renew the protection every 2 to 3 years. A wood saturator also preserves its golden-brown colour.
What is the difference between the PILON Douglas and the PILON Fir?
The same structural design, with straight brackets and the same depth options; the PILON Douglas fir is also available in a 300 cm length. Douglas fir resists moisture better than fir, but both species must be treated before installation and maintained every 2 to 3 years. Fir is less expensive; Douglas fir is recommended for highly exposed façades.
Which depth should I choose?
100 cm for standard protection in front of a front door. 120 cm for highly exposed facades (west, north, Atlantic coast) or if the door is set well back into the facade. 80 cm for sheltered entrances or configurations where the overhang is architecturally constrained.
Can tiles be fitted to this kit?
Yes, the structure can support interlocking roof tiles or slates, although no maximum load has been tested. Tiles are not included. Before buying, check that the slope of your brackets is compatible with your chosen tile type.
Does Douglas really weather to grey without affecting its resistance?
Yes. Greying is a surface reaction caused by UV exposure; it does not affect the wood’s mechanical properties. It does not replace a protective finish: any sapwood present remains less durable than the heartwood.
What canopy length should I choose?
The canopy length is the length of its beams: 150, 200, 250 or 300 cm. The brackets can be fixed closer together to suit a narrower door. For a different length, see our made-to-measure canopy, available in fir or Douglas fir from 200 cm long.
