How to choose a folding loft ladder
The COSTE is the simplest model in the range: two frame sizes, a 26 mm hatch and no handrail. It is suitable for a storage loft accessed infrequently.
If you regularly carry loads into the loft, choose a model with a handrail, such as the CHALANCON 26, available in 12 frame sizes. When unfolded, the COSTE requires 130 cm of floor space and 155 cm of clearance.
Installation advice
Loft opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing approximately 5 mm around the perimeter. Check that there is at least 135 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.
Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmers) with screws suitable for the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.
Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the last section so that it rests flat on the floor. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridging.
Care and protection
Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between sections and make sure the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if opening becomes difficult, and dust the treads.
The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which keeps out draughts.
Frequently asked questions
Which folding loft ladder is suitable for a storage loft?
A simple wooden model such as the COSTE 26 is sufficient for occasional access. It fits a 120 x 60 or 120 x 70 cm loft opening, reaches heights of up to 280 cm and supports a load of 150 kg.
Can a handrail be added to the COSTE?
The COSTE is supplied without a handrail. If a handrail is important to you, choose a model that includes one as standard, such as the CHALANCON 26, which has similar specifications.
How much floor space is needed to unfold the COSTE?
Allow 130 cm of floor space and 155 cm of clearance to open the hatch and unfold the ladder.
How do I choose the frame size for a folding loft ladder?
Choose the frame to suit the loft opening: its dimensions correspond to the opening needed in the ceiling, allowing approximately 5 mm around it for installation. Measure the existing opening, or the one you can create between the joists, then choose the closest frame size that does not exceed it.
Does a folding loft ladder need to be cut to size?
Yes, in most cases. The ladder is supplied for the maximum ceiling height and is trimmed at the bottom so that the last section rests flat on the floor. Measure the ceiling height, unfold the ladder and cut it according to the instructions.
