BERNINA 60-Minute Fire-Resistant Folding Loft Ladder, 66 mm Insulated Hatch
The BERNINA is a folding loft ladder with a hatch that resists fire for 60 minutes. It provides access to the loft where the floor must limit the spread of fire, for example above a garage or boiler room.
Its 66 mm hatch, including 60 mm of insulation, also provides thermal insulation. The ladder has metal stiles and 12 wooden treads and supports 210 kg. Four frame sizes are available, from 120 x 60 to 130 x 70 cm, for ceiling heights up to 280 cm.

Choosing the right folding loft ladder
A fire-resistant hatch is appropriate when required by regulations or your insurer, or when a higher-risk room lies beneath the loft. Check the fire-resistance period required for your project: the BERNINA provides 60 minutes, while the ARPETTAZ and NOZIERES 66 provide 45 minutes.
Allow 145 cm of floor space and 168 cm of clearance. A handrail is supplied.
Installation advice
Loft opening: prepare an opening to suit the chosen frame, allowing approximately 5 mm around the perimeter. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.
Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimming joists) using screws suitable for the structure, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame prevents the hatch from closing properly.
Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the last section so that it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, connect the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridging.
Fire resistance: the 60-minute rating is achieved only when the ladder is installed in accordance with the instructions. Do not drill into the hatch or modify the frame or its seals.
Care and protection
Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between sections and check that the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if opening becomes difficult, and dust the treads.
On a fire-resistant model, do not apply thick paint or add a covering to the hatch without the manufacturer’s approval, and check that the seals remain in place.
