Straight Staircase in Glued Laminated Oak FONTBRUNO - 14 Steps, 80 cm, Without Handrail
This straight staircase in glued laminated oak is designed for residential interior installations. With a width of 80 cm, a floor footprint of 259 cm and a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm for 14 steps, it covers standard configurations in renovation as well as new build. The steps have a section of 210x30 mm, a going of 19 cm and a step height of 20 cm. This model belongs to the Standard range.
This kit is sold without handrail — the handrail can be added after assembly — reversible left or right. The version with a wooden baluster handrail directly integrated into the kit is available under the reference FONTBRUNO + handrail. Glued laminated oak is supplied raw: a protective finish is mandatory before first use. On oak, the wood marks quickly without protection — do not postpone this step.

Key points
- ✓ Glued laminated oak: dimensional stability superior to solid wood, high wear resistance
- ✓ 210x30 mm section: thick steps, minimal flex under load, muted sound underfoot
- ✓ Risers option: closed or open staircase based on the same mechanical structure
- ✓ Handrail not included: to be ordered separately - can be fitted after assembly, reversible left or right
- ✓ Finish mandatory before use: raw oak marks quickly without protection
- ✓ Pre-drilling required: oak is a dense wood — screwing without pre-drilling risks splitting the wood
Installation advice
Preparation: check the floor-to-floor height and stairwell opening before unpacking the kit. The 259 cm footprint must match the available space in the direction of ascent. Glued laminated oak is a dense wood: two people are required for handling and positioning the stringers.
Screws: always pre-drill before screwing into oak. Oak is a hard wood that will split if screwed without a pilot hole. Use HSS drill bits with a diameter smaller than that of the screws.
Handrail: the handrail can be fitted after assembly of the staircase — reversible left or right. Order it separately from the compatible accessories.
Finish: apply the protective coating preferably before fitting to treat the hidden faces. On oak, allow 2 to 3 coats of varnish.
Maintenance and protection
Raw oak must be protected before first use. Without protection, shoe marks and impact marks quickly become embedded in the open grain of the oak. Recommended options:
- ✓ Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2–3 coats, maximum resistance, renewal every 5–7 years
- ✓ Oil-wax: natural finish enhancing the oak grain, annual renewal
- ✓ Polyurethane varnish: shine, impact resistance
Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Recommended humidity level: 45 to 65%. Check the tightness of fixings once a year.
WoodUp tip
Glued laminated oak is one of the most durable timbers for an indoor staircase — its density of approximately 700 kg/m³ gives it excellent resistance to frequent use. Unlike solid wood, glued laminated timber does not warp over time under the effect of humidity variations — a real advantage for a staircase that is subject to seasonal changes.
Important before purchasing: this model is sold without handrail. If you would like a wooden baluster handrail directly integrated, the reference FONTBRUNO + handrail includes the staircase and handrail in a single kit, with a total width of 85 cm.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the FONTBRUNO without handrail and the FONTBRUNO + handrail?
Both models share exactly the same structural dimensions (210x30 mm section, 259 cm footprint, 280 cm height, 14 steps, 19 cm going). The only difference relates to the handrail: the version without handrail (this model) requires a handrail ordered and fitted separately; the version with handrail includes the wooden baluster handrail in the kit, with a total width of 85 cm.
Oak or beech for an interior staircase — what is the difference?
Oak (700 kg/m³) is slightly denser and more wear-resistant than beech (680 kg/m³). Aesthetically, oak has a more pronounced grain and a naturally warmer tone (golden to brown depending on exposure); beech has a more regular grain and a pale, slightly pinkish tone. The choice depends on the desired aesthetic and how well it complements the other woodwork in the interior.
Can this FONTBRUNO be installed in a sheltered outdoor area?
No. Glued laminated oak is a class 2 timber — it handles indoor humidity variations well but is not designed for direct exposure to the elements or outdoor moisture. For an outdoor staircase or in a damp area, a staircase in douglas fir, larch, or pressure-treated timber is required.
Why should oak be pre-drilled before screwing?
Oak is a hard, dense wood (700 kg/m³). Screwing without a pilot hole generates lateral pressure that can split the wood along the grain. Pre-drilling with a drill bit smaller in diameter than the screw (approximately 70% of the shank diameter) eliminates this risk and makes screwing easier. This precaution is particularly important for screws near the edges of the steps and stringers.
What stairwell opening should be planned with or without handrail?
Without handrail, the recommended stairwell opening is 259x82 cm. With handrail, the width increases to 85 cm — allow for a stairwell of 259x85 cm. These dimensions refer to finished floor and ceiling, including floor coverings.
What is the lifespan of this staircase with maintenance?
A glued laminated oak staircase that is properly protected and maintained has a service life of 30 to 50 years with normal indoor use. The frequency of finish renewal (varnish every 5–7 years) is the main maintenance factor. The steps can be sanded and refinished several times over their lifetime, depending on their remaining thickness.
