- ✓ 21 cm going: greater than the Standard range’s 19 cm – more comfortable to climb on a double quarter-turn staircase
- ✓ Solid fir: an economical double quarter-turn option – careful finishing is essential
- ✓ Sold without a handrail: choose your preferred handrail and order it separately
- ✓ Landing nosing included: provides a flush finish at upper-floor level

Installation advice
Check that the finished stairwell opening is square and measures at least 160x160 cm. The overall dimensions of 165x160,4 cm extend slightly beyond the opening: the extra 5 cm in length and 0,4 cm in depth reflect the natural overhang of the structure. Decide on the direction of turn before ordering, as it cannot be changed. If required, the handrail should be fitted during assembly. Fir is easier to screw into than beech or oak, but pre-drilling is still recommended to prevent splitting.
Care and protection
Unfinished fir is susceptible to stains and moisture if left unprotected. Apply two coats of varnish before first use. On a fir double quarter-turn staircase, the winding treads are more exposed to wear: apply an extra coat in these areas. Reapply every 5–7 years. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.
WoodUp advice
The GOULES 160x160 is the most economical double quarter-turn option in the range for a 160x160 cm stairwell opening. Compared with the beech/oak ROCLES 160x160, fir is less durable over time but entirely suitable for normal family use with a carefully applied finish. The price difference between fir and beech for a double quarter-turn staircase can be significant. If your budget is tight but you want this staircase layout, the GOULES 160x160 is a good option.
Before you buy: this model is sold without a handrail. The handrail must be ordered separately and fitted during assembly. Its overall dimensions of 165x160,4 cm are slightly larger than the 160x160 cm stairwell opening: the extra 5 cm in width and 0,4 cm in depth account for the staircase structure extending slightly beyond the opening.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the GOULES 160x160 and the ROCLES 160x160?
The GOULES 160x160 is made of fir: it costs less and is easier to finish. The ROCLES 160x160 is made of laminated beech or oak: it is more durable and visually appealing. Both have exactly the same dimensions (160x160 cm stairwell opening, 165x160,4 cm overall dimensions, 14 treads + landing nosing, 19 cm riser height, 21 cm going) and are sold without a handrail.
Can the GOULES 160x160 be cut down for a floor-to-floor height of 264 cm?
Yes. For a height of 264 cm, it can be adapted by removing one tread (approximately 19 cm riser height), then trimming about 2 cm from the stringers for adjustment. This reduces the space needed at the foot of the staircase by approximately one going (21 cm). The intermediate quarter-turn sections and the top end remain unchanged: their positions are fixed by the design.
Is it easy to create a 160x160 cm stairwell opening in a concrete slab?
Creating a 160x160 cm stairwell opening in a concrete slab requires a professional. The cutting area must be checked for reinforcement, and suitable load transfer must be provided. Creating an opening in a timber floor is more straightforward, but the joists around its edges still need reinforcing. Allow a budget of €500–€1,500 for the work, depending on the type of structure.
What finish do you recommend for a fir double quarter-turn staircase with heavy foot traffic?
For a fir double quarter-turn staircase with heavy foot traffic, 3 coats of water-based polyurethane varnish provide the best protection. The winding treads on the turns wear unevenly, so reinforce the finish in these areas. First apply a primer designed to seal the pores of fir and prevent excessive absorption of the varnish. Reapply every 4–5 years on the turning treads.
Can I install the GOULES 160x160 on my own?
No. At least two people are needed. Although fir stringers are lighter than beech or oak ones, they are long and bulky. The quarter-turn section must be held in place while the stringers are secured, which takes two pairs of hands. Allow a full day for two people with intermediate DIY experience.
Why does a 160x160 cm double quarter-turn staircase have a 21 cm going?
On a double quarter-turn staircase, the going is calculated according to the geometry of the two turns and the available space. With a 160x160 cm stairwell opening and 14 treads, the calculation gives a going of 21 cm – greater than the Standard range’s 19 cm because the double quarter-turn layout distributes heights and depths differently between the straight flights and turning sections.
