Moulded beech handrail 50x50 mm glulam, indoor use
This handrail in solid glulam beech features a moulded section of 50x50 mm and a groove of 21x5 mm for fixing to standard wall brackets. Beech is a hard deciduous wood (density ~720 kg/m³), significantly more abrasion-resistant than fir or pine. It is suitable for staircases in regular daily use.
Glulam offers better dimensional stability than raw sawn solid timber: the laminations are bonded in alternating directions, which limits wood movement caused by ambient humidity variations. This stability is particularly valuable on a handrail, which is subject to temperature and humidity fluctuations throughout the seasons. For indoor use only - untreated glulam beech warps rapidly when used outdoors.
Three lengths are available: 195, 250 and 295 cm. The profile is supplied raw, to be treated before use. A surface finish is essential to protect the wood and facilitate daily maintenance. Wall brackets and fixings must be provided separately, compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.

Key points
- ✓ Hardwood (~720 kg/m³): abrasion resistance significantly superior to fir or pine - suited to staircases in sustained daily use
- ✓ Glulam: improved dimensional stability compared to raw sawn solid timber, less sensitive to humidity variations
- ✓ 21x5 mm groove: compatible with standard wall brackets available separately
- ✓ Moulded 50x50 mm profile: balanced grip, suited to both traditional and contemporary interiors
- ✓ Customisable finish: raw wood receptive to varnish, oil, and floor lacquer
Installation advice
Select brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove before purchasing. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor level.
Beech is a hardwood that requires systematic pre-drilling before screwing to avoid splitting. Use a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the screw. Tighten without excessive force: hardwood holds screws well without needing high torque. Apply the finish preferably before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all faces.
Maintenance and protection
The raw glulam beech supplied must be treated before use. Recommended finish depending on use:
- Stair floor lacquer: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to intensive friction, durability 5 to 7 years
- Polyurethane varnish: good resistance, gloss or satin finish, durability 4 to 6 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, maintenance every 1 to 2 years
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid any abrasive or acidic household products. On a varnished or floor-lacquer finish, light fine sanding followed by a fresh coat will refresh the surface after several years of intensive use.
WoodUp tip
What to know before purchasing: solid beech is a hard, dense wood — pre-drilling is mandatory before any screw fixing to avoid splitting. Treat all faces before installation (stair floor lacquer recommended). Compatible with Woodup 21x5 mm groove brackets. Wall fixing hardware not supplied. Indoor use only — beech is not suitable for outdoor use.
Frequently asked questions
Why choose beech rather than fir for a stair handrail?
Beech (density ~720 kg/m³) is significantly more resistant to daily abrasion than fir (~450 kg/m³). For a staircase used several times a day, beech marks far less easily. It is also more dimensionally stable in glulam form. In return, it is heavier and requires pre-drilling before screwing. Fir remains suitable for lightly used staircases or budget-constrained projects.
What is glulam beech and what are its advantages?
Glulam is manufactured by bonding beech laminations in alternating directions. This construction limits wood movement caused by variations in ambient temperature and humidity, a common phenomenon with raw sawn solid timber. The result is a piece that is more stable over time, less prone to cracking or warping - a valuable quality for a permanently installed handrail.
What brackets are compatible with this handrail?
Brackets must be designed for a groove 21 mm wide and 5 mm deep. Woodup offers brackets in black lacquered steel and bichrome finish compatible with this format, available separately. Allow for one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for a secure fixing.
What finish should be applied to a raw beech handrail?
For a staircase in daily use, floor lacquer is the most suitable finish: it forms a hard surface film that withstands repeated friction well. Apply 2 to 3 coats, sanding lightly between each pass (180 grit). Oil-wax gives a more natural appearance but requires more frequent renewal (every 1 to 2 years). Avoid opaque paints on beech, whose naturally light grain deserves to remain visible.
Can this handrail be cut to an intermediate length?
Yes, but as beech is a hardwood, use a circular saw blade with fine teeth (at least 40 teeth). Mark the cut with a square beforehand to ensure a right angle. After cutting, sand the end grain with 120 grit before applying the finish to the cut - bare wood absorbs ambient moisture quickly if left unprotected.
Is this handrail suitable for professional or ERP use?
This handrail is designed for residential use. For establishments open to the public (ERP), specific regulatory requirements apply (height, continuity, mechanical resistance). It is recommended to consult a structural engineer or architect before installation in a professional or public-access context.
