Round fir handrail Ø42 mm – cylindrical profile for interior staircase and corridor

This round handrail in planed solid fir Ø42 mm is designed for stair balustrades and interior circulation areas. Its cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter provides a continuous, regular grip without interruption along the entire length. The planed surface is ready to receive a finish (varnish, oil or paint) before installation.

Fir is a resinous wood with a medium grain and straight grain, lightweight (approximately 450 kg/m³) and easy to work with on site. It is exclusively suited to indoor use: without a specific surface treatment, it cannot withstand outdoor moisture. Available in 5 standard lengths from 100 to 295 cm, it can be trimmed to the exact desired length.

The 42 mm diameter is slightly slimmer than the Ø50 mm: it blends more discreetly into contemporary interiors while offering a comfortable grip for the majority of users. Fixing brackets must be ordered separately – they must be suitable for a round (non-grooved) profile, unlike brackets for grooved handrails.

Installation advice

Measure the useful length of your staircase or corridor, then trim the handrail if necessary. Cutting is done with a circular saw or mitre saw – sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper after cutting. Apply the chosen finish before installation, preferably while the piece is still accessible on all its faces.

Select brackets suitable for a round Ø42 mm profile (different from brackets for grooved handrails). Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor. Fix the brackets to the wall with fixings suited to the substrate type (concrete, plasterboard or timber frame).

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir must be treated before use. Finish options:

  • Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, optimal friction resistance, durability 5 to 7 years
  • Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt finish, renewal every 2 to 3 years
  • Interior wood paint: after grain-filling primer, for a coloured finish

For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid abrasive or acidic household products. On areas of heavy wear, a light sanding with 180-grit paper followed by a fresh coat of finish will restore protection without replacing the piece.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: the round Ø42 mm profile requires cradle brackets — not compatible with groove brackets. Allow 1 bracket every 80–100 cm. Raw fir must be treated before installation. Wall fixings not included. Indoor use only — untreated fir is not suitable for outdoor use.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Ø42 mm and the Ø50 mm for a handrail?

The Ø42 mm is slightly slimmer and blends more discreetly into contemporary interiors or staircases with a small footprint. The Ø50 mm offers a more generous grip, often preferred by elderly users or those seeking very firm support. For standard family use, both diameters are suitable – the choice depends primarily on grip comfort and the desired aesthetic.

What brackets are needed for a round Ø42 mm handrail?

This handrail has no groove – specific brackets for a round profile are therefore required, different from 21x5 mm groove brackets. These brackets come in the form of collars or stirrups that grip the wooden tube. Woodup offers round handrail brackets suited to this diameter, available separately.

Can this handrail be used outdoors?

No. Fir is a wood for indoor use only. Outdoors, humidity cycles cause swelling, cracking and accelerated degradation, even under shelter. For outdoor use, opt for a douglas fir handrail (sheltered outdoor) or an exotic hardwood handrail (fully exposed outdoor).

How do you calculate the number of brackets required?

Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm. For 150 cm, 2 brackets are sufficient (one at each end). For 195 cm, 3 brackets are recommended. For 250 or 295 cm, allow 4 brackets spaced at equal intervals to avoid any mid-span deflection.

Should the finish be applied before or after installation?

It is strongly recommended to apply the finish before installation. Laying the piece flat allows all faces to be covered evenly, including the underside and ends. Once fixed to the wall, the areas in contact with the brackets are difficult to access. Allow to dry completely before installation.

Why choose a fir handrail rather than beech or oak?

Fir is noticeably lighter and more affordable than beech (density ~720 kg/m³) or oak (~750 kg/m³). It is easy to work with and cut on site. In return, it is a softwood that marks more easily under heavy use. For a high-traffic staircase or in households with children, beech or oak will be more resistant to daily abrasion.
