Round fir handrail Ø42 mm – cylindrical profile for indoor staircases and corridors
This round handrail in planed solid fir, Ø42 mm is designed for staircases and indoor passageways. Its cylindrical profile, 42 mm in diameter, provides a continuous, consistent grip along its entire length. The planed surface is ready for a finish (varnish, oil or paint) before installation.
Fir is a lightweight softwood with a medium grain and straight grain pattern (approximately 450 kg/m³), and is easy to work with on site. It is suitable for indoor use only: without specific surface treatment, it cannot withstand outdoor moisture. Available in 5 standard lengths from 100 to 295 cm, it can be cut to the exact length required.
The 42 mm diameter is slightly slimmer than Ø50 mm: it blends more discreetly into contemporary interiors while offering a comfortable grip for most users. Mounting brackets must be ordered separately and must suit a round, ungrooved profile, unlike brackets for grooved handrails.

Installation tips
Measure the required length along your staircase or corridor, then cut the handrail to size if needed. Use a circular saw or mitre saw, then sand the cut end with 120-grit paper. Apply your chosen finish before installation, preferably while you can still reach every surface.
Choose brackets suitable for a round Ø42 mm profile (not brackets for grooved handrails). Position the brackets at regular intervals, with no more than 80 cm between them. Install the handrail at a height of 80 to 100 cm above the stair nosings or finished floor. Fix the brackets to the wall using fixings suitable for the wall material (concrete, plasterboard or timber framing).
Care and protection
Unfinished fir must be treated before use. Finish options:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats for excellent resistance to rubbing; lasts 5 to 7 years
- Interior wood wax oil: natural matt appearance; reapply every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: apply after a pore-sealing primer for a coloured finish
For routine care, a slightly damp cloth is enough. Avoid abrasive or acidic household cleaners. In heavily worn areas, lightly sanding with 180-grit paper and applying another coat of finish restores protection without replacing the handrail.

Before you buy: the round Ø42 mm profile requires cradle brackets, which are not compatible with grooved handrail brackets. Allow 1 bracket every 80–100 cm. Unfinished fir must be treated before installation. Wall fixings are not supplied. Indoor use only – untreated fir is not suitable outdoors.

What is the difference between Ø42 mm and Ø50 mm for a handrail?
The Ø42 mm handrail is slightly slimmer and blends more discreetly into contemporary interiors or staircases with a small footprint. The Ø50 mm handrail offers a fuller grip, often preferred by older people or anyone seeking a particularly firm handhold. Both diameters are suitable for standard family use – the choice mainly depends on grip comfort and the look you want.
Which brackets do I need for a round Ø42 mm handrail?
This handrail has no groove, so it needs brackets specifically designed for a round profile, rather than brackets for a 21 × 5 mm groove. These brackets have collars or cradles that hold the wooden rail. Woodup offers brackets for round handrails in this diameter, available separately.
Can this handrail be used outdoors?
No. Fir is suitable for indoor use only. Outdoors, cycles of moisture cause swelling, cracking and faster deterioration, even under shelter. For outdoor use, choose a Douglas fir handrail (sheltered outdoor areas) or an exotic hardwood handrail (fully exposed outdoor areas).
How do I calculate the number of brackets needed?
Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm. For 150 cm, 2 brackets are enough (one at each end). For 195 cm, 3 brackets are recommended. For 250 or 295 cm, allow 4 brackets spaced evenly to prevent sagging in the middle.
Should the finish be applied before or after installation?
We strongly recommend applying the finish before installation. Laying the handrail flat lets you coat every surface evenly, including the underside and ends. Once it is fixed to the wall, the areas touching the brackets are difficult to reach. Let it dry completely before installation.
Why choose a fir handrail rather than beech or oak?
Fir is considerably lighter and more affordable than beech (density ~720 kg/m³) or oak (~750 kg/m³). It is easy to work and cut on site. The trade-off is that it is a softwood and marks more easily with heavy use. For a busy staircase or a home with children, beech or oak will better withstand everyday wear.
