Moulded fir handrail, 50x50 mm, with 21x5 mm groove
This moulded solid fir handrail has a 50x50 mm square cross-section and a 21x5 mm groove compatible with standard handrail brackets. The moulded profile makes it appear less bulky while providing a secure grip.
Fir is a lightweight softwood well suited to everyday indoor settings such as straight staircases, corridors and mezzanines. Its moderate density (approximately 450 kg/m³) makes it easy to handle during installation. Supplied unfinished, it can be varnished, painted, oiled or waxed to suit your décor.
This model is sold without brackets. It is compatible with brackets for a 21x5 mm groove, available separately from Woodup. Three lengths are offered: 200, 250 and 300 cm. For longer staircases, check the lengths available for other models in the range.

Installation advice
Choose brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove before buying. Fix the wall brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between supports. For a corridor or straight staircase, start by fitting the brackets at both ends, stretch a string line to align the intermediate brackets, then secure them all.
Install the handrail at a height of 80 to 100 cm, measured from the finished floor or the tread nosing. Fit the bracket heads into the groove and secure them with suitable screws (not supplied). If the handrail is longer than required, the fir can easily be cut to length with a saw.
Lightly sand the cut ends with 120-grit sandpaper before applying the finish to prevent the wood from splintering.
Care and protection
Unfinished fir must be treated before regular use. Choose a finish suited to how it will be used:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to rubbing, lasting 5 to 7 years
- Hardwax oil: natural, matt appearance; reapply every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: apply after a pore-sealing primer
For routine care, wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products and acidic cleaners. After several years of use, a light sanding with fine-grit paper followed by a fresh coat of finish is enough to refresh the surface.

Before you buy: the 50x50 mm moulded profile is compatible with WoodUp brackets for a 21x5 mm groove. Treat the unfinished fir on all sides, including inside the groove, before installation. Wall fixings are not supplied. Allow 1 bracket every 80–100 cm. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
Which brackets are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove?
Compatible brackets are wall-mounting plates with a 21 mm wide, 5 mm thick lug, available in black lacquered steel or a bichromate finish. These brackets are sold separately by Woodup. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for adequate support along the full length.
Can this handrail be cut to an intermediate length?
Yes. Solid fir is easy to cut with a circular saw or jigsaw. Mark the cut precisely, use a fine-toothed wood blade and sand the cut end to prevent splinters. Cutting it does not affect the wood’s mechanical properties.
What is the difference between this model and the 56x45 mm handrail?
The 50x50 mm cross-section is square and slightly slimmer in thickness. The 56x45 mm version is wider but not as tall, giving it a flatter profile and a slightly larger contact area for the palm. Your choice will mainly depend on compatibility with any existing brackets and your preferred appearance.
Is this handrail suitable for heavily used staircases?
Fir is a soft wood that may show marks under heavy use. For a high-traffic staircase, such as in an apartment building or commercial setting, a beech or oak handrail is preferable, as these woods are considerably more resistant to abrasion. Fir is well suited to private staircases with normal daily use.
Does the handrail need finishing before installation?
We strongly recommend applying the finish before fitting the handrail, rather than afterwards. Working with the wood laid flat ensures an even coat on every side, including the groove and ends. Allow it to dry completely before fixing it to the brackets.
Why choose fir rather than a handrail made from synthetic material?
Solid wood naturally feels warmer to the touch than PVC or aluminium, making the handrail more comfortable to use in winter. It is also easier to paint or customise. Unlike synthetic profiles, it can be repaired or refinished to match after several years of use.
