Straight Half-Post Solid Wood H 120cm Section 70x34mm - 4 Wood Species for Wall Balustrade
This straight half-post in solid wood measures 120 cm in height with a section of 70x34 mm. Its half-thickness section (34mm instead of 70mm for a full post) is designed specifically for installation in wall support: the flat face makes direct contact with the wall or stair stringer, while the visible face offers the same appearance as a full post. It is available in four wood species - douglas, fir, pine or beech - to suit each application.
Sold individually, it is used at the ends of a balustrade that start or finish against a wall, or at any lateral anchor point on a wall structure. It connects directly to full 70x70mm posts, bottom rails, handrails and balusters in the WoodUp range. Supplied raw untreated, it accepts paint, stain, oil or varnish according to the desired finish.

Installation advice
Wall fixing: The flat face of the half-post bears directly against the wall. Fix it by screwing into the wall with long wood screws (≥ 80 mm) and wall plugs suited to the wall type (concrete, breeze block, brick, wood). Allow for a minimum of 3 fixing points along the height to ensure rigidity. In plasterboard or lightweight partition walls, anchor into the structural studs.
Connection to the balustrade: The handrail and bottom rail bear or slot into the wide face (70mm) of the half-post, exactly as on a full post. Pre-drill the joints before screwing to prevent the wood from splitting. Apply the finish before wall fixing to cover all accessible faces.
Maintenance and protection
Indoors, apply varnish or oil-wax before installation. In sheltered outdoor settings (douglas only), apply a wood stain or exterior oil, renewed every 2-3 years. Beech must not be used outdoors - it deteriorates rapidly in damp conditions. Check the tightness of the wall fixing screws annually.
WoodUp tip
Important before purchasing: the half-post is designed exclusively for installation against a wall or a stringer — its flat rear face allows direct screwing into the support. It cannot be used as a free-standing central post. Check that the supporting wall or stringer is flat and plumb over its full height before fitting: a gap of a few millimetres at the bottom will result in visible play at the top. The finish must be applied before installation on all faces, including the rear face that will be in contact with the wall.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a straight half-post and a full post for a balustrade?
A full post (70x70mm, Straight solid wood post 120cm) stands freely in space - it is fixed to the floor by a floor plate. A half-post (70x34mm) is designed to be set against a wall or a stringer: its flat face presses against the wall surface, reducing bulk and simplifying fixing. Visually, the front face of the half-post is identical to the full post - the junction with the wall is clean and gap-free.
Can this half-post be fixed to a wooden stair stringer?
Yes. It is in fact one of the most common configurations. Fix the half-post to the lateral face of the stringer with long Ø5mm wood screws (≥ 80 mm). If the stringer is made of laminated or thick solid wood, 3 screws distributed along the height are sufficient. Check that the screw does not reach the treads or the visible parts of the stringer on the staircase side.
Is this half-post compatible with WoodUp fir balustrade kits?
Partially. The visible face width (70mm) is compatible with the handrails and bottom rails in the spare parts range (70x70mm section). However, the standard fir balustrade kits (Fir balustrade kit 2m + 1 post, Fir balustrade kit 1m without post) use posts with a 60x60mm section - there may be a slight 5mm offset in width. Check your system before ordering.
Can a douglas half-post be used in an unsheltered outdoor setting?
Class 3 douglas resists outdoor conditions better than fir, but permanent exposure to the elements without treatment accelerates greying. For an exposed exterior, apply an exterior wood saturator before installation and renew annually. Douglas retains its mechanical properties even when greyed, but loses its natural golden appearance without maintenance.
What finish should be applied to a beech or fir half-post?
Apply the finish before installation to cover the rear face (glued against the stringer or wall) which is difficult to access afterwards. Beech takes paint very easily: fine grain, uniform surface, even paint absorption. Fir and pine require a primer before painting to prevent rings caused by resin. Douglas can be left raw indoors or treated with an oil to enhance its natural golden hue.
