This solid wood straight half post is 120 cm high with a 70x34 mm cross-section. Its half-thickness design (34 mm rather than 70 mm for a full post) is specifically intended for wall mounting: the flat face sits directly against the wall or stair stringer, while the visible face looks the same as a full post. It is available in four wood species - Douglas fir, fir, pine or beech - to suit different uses. A balustrade is also known as a guardrail.

Sold individually, it is used where a balustrade starts or ends against a wall, or wherever a side fixing point is needed on a wall structure. It pairs directly with the 70x70 mm full posts, bottom rails, handrails and spindles in the WoodUp range. Supplied unfinished and untreated, it can be painted, stained, oiled or varnished to achieve the desired finish.

Installation advice

Wall fixing: The flat face of the half post sits directly against the wall. Screw it into the wall using long wood screws (≥ 80 mm) and wall plugs suited to the wall material (concrete, concrete block, brick or wood). Use at least 3 fixing points along its height to ensure rigidity. For plaster walls or lightweight partitions, fix into the structural studs.

Connection to the balustrade: The handrail and bottom rail can be butted against or recessed into the wide face (70 mm) of the half post, just as they would be on a full post. Pre-drill the joints before screwing to prevent the wood from splitting. Apply the finish before fixing the post to the wall so you can coat all accessible faces.

Care and protection

For indoor use, apply floor varnish or an oil-wax finish before installation. For sheltered outdoor use (Douglas fir only), apply an exterior wood stain or oil and reapply every 2–3 years. Do not use beech outdoors: it deteriorates quickly when exposed to moisture. Check the tightness of the wall-fixing screws annually.

WoodUp tip

Before you buy: the half post is designed only for installation against a wall or stringer; its flat rear face allows it to be screwed directly into the support. It cannot be used as a freestanding central post. Before installation, check that the wall or supporting stringer is flat and plumb along its full height: a difference of a few millimetres at the bottom will leave a visible gap at the top. Apply the finish to all faces before installation, including the rear face that will sit against the wall.

What is the difference between a straight half post and a full post for a balustrade?

A full post (70x70 mm, 120 cm solid wood straight post) is freestanding and fixed to the floor with a mounting plate. A half post (70x34 mm) is designed to fit against a wall or stringer: its flat face sits against the supporting surface, taking up less space and simplifying fixing. Visually, the front of the half post matches the full post, creating a neat join with the wall and no gap.

Can this half post be fixed to a wooden stair stringer?

Yes. This is one of the most common arrangements. Fix the half post to the side of the stringer using long Ø5 mm wood screws (≥ 80 mm). If the stringer is made of laminated timber or thick solid wood, 3 screws spaced along its height are sufficient. Check that the screws will not reach the treads or visible parts of the stringer on the stair side.

Is this half post compatible with WoodUp fir balustrade kits?

Partially. Its visible face width (70 mm) is compatible with the handrails and bottom rails in the individual components range (70x70 mm cross-section). However, the standard fir balustrade kits (2 m fir balustrade kit + 1 post, 1 m fir balustrade kit without post) use posts with a 60x60 mm cross-section, so there may be a 5 mm difference in width. Check your system before ordering.

Can a Douglas fir half post be used outdoors without shelter?

Class 3 Douglas fir withstands outdoor conditions better than fir, but permanent exposure to the weather without treatment speeds up greying. For an exposed outdoor location, apply an exterior wood saturating oil before installation and reapply it annually. Douglas fir retains its structural properties even after greying, but loses its natural golden appearance without maintenance.

What finish should be applied to a beech or fir half post?

Apply the finish before installation to cover the rear face, which sits against the stringer or wall and will be difficult to reach afterwards. Beech is very easy to paint: its fine grain and even surface give consistent paint coverage. Fir and pine need a primer before painting to prevent resin stains. Douglas fir can be left unfinished indoors or oiled to bring out its natural golden colour.
