Choosing the right western-style door
Three questions will guide your choice: do you want to let air and light through, how wide is the opening, and what finish would you like? The WoodUp range has four models:
| Model | Panel | Thickness | Width | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural pine louvered | Louvred slats let air and light through | 21 mm | 68 or 78 cm | Unfinished, ready for finishing |
| White-lacquered louvered | Louvred slats let air and light through | 21 mm | 68 or 78 cm | White-lacquered, ready to fit |
| Rustic pine, 30 mm | Solid panels block the view and airflow | 30 mm | 68 or 78 cm | Unfinished, ready for finishing |
| Made to measure | Engraved pattern, choice of cut-outs | Depending on the wood species | Made to measure, 1 or 2 leaves | Depending on the wood species |
For standard models, choose the width according to the wall opening:
| Width of both leaves | Recommended wall opening |
|---|---|
| 68 cm (2 leaves of 34 cm) | 73 cm |
| 78 cm (2 leaves of 39 cm) | 83 cm |
Western-style doors can be fitted with double-action pivots, fixed to the floor and lintel, or double-action spring hinges, screwed to the side of the opening. Both allow the door to swing in either direction and return to the closed position.
Installation tips
Measurements: check the wall opening before ordering: 73 cm for the 68 cm leaves, 83 cm for the 78 cm leaves. Do not confuse the width of the leaves with the width of the opening.
Installation: choose double-action pivots or hinges, 2 per leaf. Always pre-drill the pine before inserting screws. At 30 mm thick, the leaves are heavier, so check that the fixing surface is strong enough.
Care and protection
The pine comes unfinished: leave it natural or apply paint, varnish or stain suitable for indoor wood before fitting. Pre-drill before screwing in the pivots or hinges to avoid splitting the wood.
Frequently asked questions
How does this saloon door differ from the louvered models?
The louvered models let air and light through between the slats. This rustic door has solid panels: nothing passes through, fully separating the rooms. It is also thicker, at 30 mm rather than 21 mm, and taller, reaching 115 cm at the centre.
Pivots or hinges for a solid pine western-style door?
Either option works. Double-action pivots attach to the floor and lintel; double-action spring hinges screw to the side of the opening, with 2 per leaf, or 4 for the door. The door comes without hardware.
Can a western-style door be installed outdoors?
No, it is designed for indoor use. Pine is not durable outdoors: exposure to rain and sun will cause it to stain, split and warp.
