Round fir handrail Ø50 mm – sold on its own, without brackets
This round solid fir handrail Ø50 mm is sold without mounting plates or screws, for installations where brackets are already in place or will be chosen separately. The 21x5 mm groove is compatible with standard brackets for grooved handrails. The cylindrical profile provides a consistent, continuous grip.
Fir is a lightweight softwood (approximately 450 kg/m³) that is easy to cut and finish. It is suitable for indoor use only: outdoors, even under shelter, cycles of damp and dry weather cause swelling and cracking without suitable protection. Supplied unfinished, it can be painted, varnished or oiled to achieve the look you want.
This model is available in several lengths from 100 to 300 cm, making it suitable for small staircases as well as corridors and landings. It can be cut to the exact length required with a circular saw or mitre saw.

Installation advice
First, check that your brackets are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between support points. For lengths under 150 cm, two brackets are sufficient when positioned 15–20 cm from each end.
Install the handrail 80 to 100 cm above the stair nosings or finished floor. If it needs cutting, mark a precise square cut, saw with a fine-toothed wood blade, then sand the cut end with 120-grit paper before applying the finish.
Ideally, apply your chosen finish before installation to cover every side, including the groove and cut ends.
Care and protection
Unfinished fir must be treated before regular use. Choose a finish to suit how the handrail will be used and the look you want:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, high resistance to rubbing, lasts 5 to 7 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance; reapply every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: apply after a pore-sealing primer for a coloured finish
For routine care, wiping with a slightly damp cloth is enough. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners. An area with heavy wear can be refreshed locally with light, fine sanding followed by a fresh coat of finish.
WoodUp advice
Before you buy: this handrail is sold without brackets. Order cradle brackets suitable for the round Ø50 mm profile separately; grooved-handrail brackets are not compatible. Allow one bracket every 80–100 cm, with a bracket within 30 cm of each end. Wall-mounting fixings are not supplied. Treat the unfinished fir before installation. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
How does this differ from the Ø50 mm version supplied with brackets?
This model is sold on its own, without brackets or screws. It suits anyone who already has brackets installed or wants to choose their own fixings. The version with brackets includes 2 to 3 adjustable bichromated mounting plates depending on length, but comes in only 4 lengths (150 to 300 cm), compared with 5 here (100 to 300 cm).
Which brackets should I buy for this Ø50 mm handrail?
Compatible brackets are standard wall-mounted plates designed for a groove 21 mm wide and 5 mm deep. Woodup offers brackets in black-painted steel and with a bichromated finish, sold separately. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing along the full length.
Can this handrail be used outdoors?
No. Fir is a wood for indoor use. Outdoors, even beneath a canopy, changes in humidity cause swelling, cracking and faster deterioration. For outdoor use, choose a Douglas fir handrail (class 3, suitable for indoors and sheltered outdoor areas) or one made from tropical hardwood (class 4).
How do I work out how many brackets I need?
Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm. For a 200 cm length, use 3 brackets: one near each end and one in the centre. For 300 cm, 4 brackets spaced 75 cm apart provide stable support without visible sagging.
Can this handrail be cut to a length between the standard sizes?
Yes. Fir is easy to cut with a circular saw or mitre saw. Mark a square cut, saw with a fine-toothed wood blade, then sand the cut end with 120-grit paper. Cutting does not affect the handrail’s strength or compatibility with the brackets.
Why choose a round handrail rather than a moulded one?
The round profile lets the hand glide continuously along its full length, with no corners or raised details to catch the palm. It is often recommended for frequently used staircases or older people. A moulded profile, square or rectangular with chamfered edges, is more common in traditional interiors and offers a firmer grip from the side.
