Straight Staircase CHEVALARD – Glued Laminated Beech or Fir, 280 cm, 14 Steps
The straight CHEVALARD staircase is available in glued laminated beech or fir, delivered as a kit for on-site assembly. Its floor-to-floor height is 280 cm for 14 steps, with a width of 80 cm and a footprint of 259 cm. The steps have a section of 210x30 mm, a tread depth of 19 cm and a riser height of 20 cm. This model belongs to the Standard range.
The choice between the two timber species depends on budget, intended use and desired aesthetics. Glued laminated beech is denser, more wear-resistant and more dimensionally stable — recommended for intensive daily use. Fir is lighter, more economical and easier to work — suited to moderate use or a painted finish. Both versions are delivered raw and require finishing before use.

- ✓ Steps parcel: 770 x 430 x 220 mm
- ✓ Risers parcel: 740 x 330 x 220 mm (version with risers only)
Key features
- ✓ Two timber species: glued laminated beech for durability, fir for economy
- ✓ Standard dimensions: tread depth 19 cm, riser height 20 cm, section 210x30 mm
- ✓ Combinable options: with or without risers, with or without handrail
- ✓ 259 cm footprint: more compact than the MORENO (273 cm) for the same height
- ✓ Handrail fitted after assembly: can be installed at any time, reversible left or right
- ✓ Finishing required: delivered as raw wood – surface treatment before use
Installation advice
Check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm) and available footprint (259 cm minimum) before unpacking the kit. These measurements apply to finished floors and ceilings, including coverings. For the stairwell opening, allow 2 to 5 cm clearance relative to the footprint and width to facilitate installation and plumb adjustments.
Assemble the stringers, treads and risers in accordance with the instructions provided. The stringers parcel measures 3920 mm in length — ensure sufficient access and clearance in the room before delivery. Secure the staircase firmly to the floor and upper support using fixings appropriate for the support material. A minimum of two people is required to position the stringers. The handrail can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled — it is reversible left or right.
Maintenance and protection
Recommended initial finish: both timber species are delivered raw. Apply a protective finish before first use:
- ✓ Beech: aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish 2–3 coats – maximum wear resistance (renewal every 5–7 years)
- ✓ Fir: oil-wax for a natural look, or varnish for enhanced protection
Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH neutral. Check fastener tightness annually.
WoodUp Advice
If you are torn between fir and beech, the deciding factor is intensity of use. For a main staircase used daily by the whole family, glued laminated beech is the right choice: its greater density offers better resistance to footfall marks and impact. Fir is perfectly adequate for a mezzanine access or a secondary staircase with limited traffic.
Important before purchasing: the handrail is not included in the standard version — it must be ordered separately from our staircase accessories. The choice of with or without risers must be made at the time of ordering and cannot be changed after delivery, as the stringers are notched differently depending on the configuration.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the CHEVALARD and the MORENO?
The MORENO is available in fir only, cuttable up to 285 cm with 15 steps and a footprint of 273 cm. The CHEVALARD is available in beech or fir, for 280 cm with 14 steps and a footprint of 259 cm — more compact. The CHEVALARD has a slightly larger tread depth (19 cm vs 18.3 cm) and a thicker step section (210x30 mm vs 200x28 mm), giving it superior walking comfort.
Is glued laminated beech more resistant than solid beech?
Glued laminated beech is more dimensionally stable than solid timber: it better withstands variations in humidity and deformation over time. Wear resistance is comparable, but structural stability is a notable advantage for a staircase subject to variations in indoor temperature and humidity.
Can the CHEVALARD be ordered without risers and have them added later?
No. The stringer notched for steps without risers differs from the stringer with risers — the notches are not the same. The choice must be made at the time of ordering and cannot be changed after delivery.
Which handrail is compatible with the CHEVALARD?
Several WoodUp handrail models are compatible with this 80 cm straight staircase: wooden spindle handrail, black metal bar handrail, cable handrail. The handrail is fitted after the staircase has been assembled. Consult the accessories section of the product page or contact customer services to verify compatibility according to the chosen configuration (with or without risers, timber species).
Can the CHEVALARD staircase be cut to height?
This staircase can be cut to height, at your own responsibility. Cutting reduces the floor-to-floor height without altering the step section — the first step will therefore be lower than the others (false step). This point must be anticipated before any cutting. For the full method, consult our guide:
Why choose a straight staircase rather than a quarter-turn staircase?
A straight staircase is the simplest solution to install and the most comfortable to use, provided the necessary footprint is available (259 cm for the CHEVALARD). If the layout of the room or the stairwell opening does not allow 259 cm in a straight line, a quarter-turn staircase is required to change direction.
