Installation tips
For a 150 cm fence: plan for 3 rails (bottom at 10 cm, middle at 70 cm, top at 140 cm). Pre-drill each slat 2 cm from the edge to prevent splitting. Use A2 stainless steel screws 4×50 mm for a lasting fix. Apply treatment to all faces before installation, paying particular attention to the end grain.
Spacing between slats: a solid gate acts like a sail in the wind, placing significant strain on the hinges and posts. A gap of 15 to 20 mm between slats significantly reduces mechanical stress — recommended for large widths and windy areas. A gap of 10 mm gives a near-solid screening effect. Beyond 25 mm, the slatted effect allows light and visibility through.
Maintenance and protection
Renew the exterior stain or oil every 2 to 3 years. Inspect the bottom 10 cm of the slats — the area most exposed to water and soil splashes. Douglas is resistant without treatment, but annual maintenance multiplies its lifespan.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 150 cm and 175 cm slats?
The only difference is the length (25 cm longer for the 175 cm). The 150 cm is suitable for fences and gates of standard height. The 175 cm is intended for gates requiring greater height or more significant screening.
Can these slats be used horizontally in a fence?
Yes. 150 cm slats fitted horizontally create a contemporary look known as a "horizontal fence". In this case, plan for vertical posts every 120 cm to keep the slats straight.
Can these slats be cut to a shorter length?
Yes. Solid wood is easy to cut. Immediately treat the fresh cut with an end-grain treatment product to prevent moisture absorption.
Is there a complete gate kit available for this slat length?
No. For this length, the gate must be assembled yourself using these slats, 91×21 mm rails and a diagonal brace. Woodup kit gates are supplied at a maximum height of 120 cm.
How many slats are needed to build a 5-metre fence at 150 cm height?
In 91×21 mm section edge to edge: approximately 11 slats per linear metre, i.e. 55 slats for 5 metres. With a 5 mm gap, allow approximately 50 slats.
