Pack contents

Natural untreated wood fence slat, length 60 cm. Bevelled Fir and Bevelled Douglas 91x21 mm, Rounded Pine 80x18 mm. Sold individually. Compatible with Woodup 91x21 mm rails. Spacing between slats from 10 to 30 mm depending on desired effect: from solid screening to an open trellis. Water-repellent protection to be applied before installation. Douglas recommended for exposed outdoor use. Calculate the number of slats: fence length divided by (slat width + chosen spacing).

Natural Wood Fence Slat 60 cm - Fir, Pine or Douglas, Sections 91x21 or 80x18 mm

This natural untreated wood fence slat measures 60 cm in length. Three species are available: Bevelled Fir and Bevelled Douglas in section 91x21 mm, and Rounded Pine in section 80x18 mm. Sold individually to build or complete a low fence, a gate or a decorative panel. It is compatible with the 91x21 mm rails in the Woodup range. An exterior water-repellent treatment must be applied before installation.

Key points

  • 3 species: Fir, Pine or Douglas depending on desired appearance and durability
  • Sold individually: precise order based on the linear length of fencing required
  • Compatible with Woodup rails: consistent assembly across the entire range
  • Bevelled profile (fir/douglas): natural rainwater drainage
  • Raw wood: can be painted, stained or left natural depending on your décor

Installation advice

Calculate the number of slats required: for a fence without spacing, allow 17 slats of 60 cm per linear metre (91x21 mm section fitted edge to edge). With a 5 mm gap between slats, allow 15 to 16 slats per metre. Pre-drill each slat before screwing to avoid splitting, particularly with Pine and Fir. Use 4x40 mm stainless steel screws to prevent rust streaks. Apply treatment to all faces and edges before installation.

Spacing between slats: the choice of spacing influences both wind resistance and visual effect. A spacing of 10 mm gives an almost solid finish. Between 15 and 20 mm, wind load is reduced — recommended for long runs and exposed areas. Beyond 25 mm, the trellis effect allows light and sight through.

Maintenance and protection

Renew the water-repellent treatment or stain every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure. Douglas can be left untreated and will naturally turn grey. Untreated Pine and Fir deteriorate quickly in damp conditions — the initial treatment is essential. Check the tightness of the screws annually, especially at the ends of the rails.

Frequently asked questions

How many slats are needed for 1 metre of fencing without spacing?

For a 91x21 mm section fitted edge to edge: 11 slats per linear metre. With a 5 mm gap: approximately 10 slats per metre. Adjust according to the desired spacing between slats.

Can different wood species be mixed in the same fence?

Technically yes, but as the sections are different (91x21 mm vs 80x18 mm), the visual result will be uneven. It is advisable to stick to a single species for aesthetic consistency.

Are these slats compatible with the 91x21 mm rails in the range?

Yes. The bevelled fir and douglas slats in section 91x21 mm are directly compatible with Woodup 91x21 mm rails. Rounded Pine (80x18 mm) can also be fixed to them but presents a slight visual offset.

What is the difference between a bevelled slat and a rounded slat?

The bevelled slat has a top edge cut at an angle that encourages rainwater runoff, limiting moisture at the top. The rounded slat (Pine) has a decorative semi-cylindrical profile, less optimised for water drainage.

Can these slats be painted in colour rather than stained?

Yes. An exterior microporous paint (acrylic or alkyd) is perfectly suitable for this type of wood. Apply a wood primer before the topcoat for better adhesion and durability.

Key points

  • 4 lengths: 100 to 200 cm for all opening widths
  • Douglas fir or Fir: superior natural durability of Douglas fir outdoors
  • 91x21 mm cross-section: compatible with the entire Woodup fence and gate range
  • Sold individually: precise calculation based on the number of rails required
  • Cut to exact length: solid wood easily machined on site

Installation advice

For a standard fence, place one rail 10-15 cm from the bottom and one 10-15 cm from the top. For heights> 80 cm, add an intermediate rail. Fix the boards to the rails with stainless steel screws 4x40 mm by pre-drilling. Make sure the rails are level before fixing the boards. On gates, also plan a diagonal brace to prevent warping under the weight of the leaf.

Maintenance and protection

Treat the rail before installation with an exterior wood stain or oil. Renew every 2 to 3 years. Douglas fir naturally silvers and remains stable without treatment. Fir requires regular maintenance to prevent accelerated decay in damp areas. Check contact areas with posts or boards annually.

Frequently asked questions

How many rails are needed for a gate of 120 cm in height?

Minimum two rails: one at the bottom at 10 cm and one at the top at 110 cm. For added rigidity, add a third rail at mid-height (60 cm) and a diagonal brace.

Can the 200 cm rail be used for a gate 200 cm wide?

Yes, the 200 cm rail corresponds exactly to this width. For a gate, plan for 3 rails per leaf along the height to ensure the rigidity of the whole structure.

Can the rail be cut to an intermediate length?

Yes. Solid wood is easily cut with a circular saw or mitre saw. Immediately treat the fresh cut with an end-grain sealant to protect the exposed cross-section.

What is the difference in durability between Douglas fir and Fir for this rail?

Douglas fir has a natural durability class 3 outdoors without ground contact, allowing it to last several years without treatment. Fir (class 3-4) is more susceptible to fungi and requires regular treatment in damp conditions.

Is this rail compatible with Woodup fence and gate kits?

Yes. It is sized to fit into all kits in the Woodup fence and gate range using the 91x21 mm cross-section.
