Solid Fir Balustrade Kit 2m + 1 Post – Interior Balustrade to Self-Assemble
This raw solid fir balustrade kit covers a span of 2 metres and stands at 1.02 m in height, in accordance with French standards for interior landing balustrades. It is designed to secure mezzanines, landings or interior passageways, and can be assembled without specialist machinery.
The kit includes all the structural components: a moulded handrail 60x50mm, a bottom rail 50x35mm, 12 balusters 50x20mm, the wooden connecting dowels and 1 post 60x60mm height 1.2m. The pieces are pre-measured and machined: the rebates are integrated to position the balusters without a jig. Assembly is carried out by fixing the bottom rail to the substrate, inserting the balusters into the rebates, then fitting the handrail onto the posts. The fir is delivered raw and untreated: oiling, varnishing or staining before use significantly extends the service life.
Floor fixing plates are not supplied as they depend on the substrate: wood, concrete or tiles each require different plates and anchors. The kit is exclusively designed for indoor use – fir, a natural class 2 timber species, does not withstand exposure to the elements without enhanced treatment and a change of category.

Installation advice
Preparation: Check the flatness and solidity of the substrate. The fir is delivered raw: apply a first coat of finish before assembly if you opt for a varnish or paint (easier access). You will need a drill, a spirit level and a screwdriver.
Installation: Begin by fixing the bottom rail to the floor using brackets or plates suited to the substrate material. Position the balusters in the rebates of the bottom rail, observing a maximum spacing of 11 cm between balusters. Then fix the post or posts using plates (not included). Place the handrail on the posts and dowel the whole assembly together. Check the vertical alignment with a spirit level before final tightening.
Important: This kit covers a span of 2 m with 1 post. For longer spans, combine it with the 2m kit without post or the 1m kit without post (available separately). Allow 1 post every 1.5 m maximum to ensure the stability of the whole assembly.
Maintenance and protection
Solid fir is a softwood with natural durability class 2. In dry indoor use, it requires little maintenance, but a protective finish remains essential to limit marks and moisture absorption. Apply 2 to 3 coats of floor varnish, oil-wax or polyurethane varnish before or after assembly. Clean with lightly soapy water, without abrasive products. An annual check of the joints (tightening of screws, condition of dowels) extends the service life beyond 15 years in dry indoor conditions.
WoodUp Tip
Good to know before buying: this kit covers exactly 2 metres of span with one post included. If your span is slightly longer (2.05m for example), you will need to either trim the components or order an additional kit. The assembled height of 1.02m complies with standard NF P01-012 for interior landing balustrades. Apply the finish (oil, floor varnish or paint) before final assembly to protect all surfaces, including the grooves and recesses that are inaccessible once assembled. Floor fixing plates must be sourced separately.
Frequently asked questions
How do you fix the fir balustrade kit to a concrete floor?
On concrete, fix the post plates with expansion anchors or chemical anchors (not included). Choose stainless steel plates to avoid rust marks on the floor. Drill to a minimum diameter of 8 mm for Ø6 mm anchors. The plate must be fixed on at least 4 points to ensure the stability of the whole assembly.
Can the 2m fir balustrade kit be used outdoors?
No. Raw fir is not suitable for permanent exposure to the elements. For outdoor use, opt for spare parts in douglas fir or larch, available on Woodup. Douglas fir is naturally classified 3b (outdoor wood under cover) and is far more resistant to moisture.
How do you extend the balustrade beyond 2 metres?
Combine this kit with one or more 1m or 2m kits without post. Each extension fits seamlessly into the continuation of the handrail. Allow 1 intermediate post every 1.5 m to maintain rigidity. Sections are joined by dowelling or metal brackets to be ordered separately.
What finish should you choose for the fir wood of an interior balustrade?
For maximum resistance to impact and scratches (staircase, busy mezzanine): staircase floor varnish, 2–3 coats. For a matt, natural look: oil-wax to be renewed every 2 years. For a coloured finish: interior wood stain or paint. Avoid exterior products for indoor use, as they may release solvents in enclosed spaces.
What is the regulatory spacing between balusters?
French regulations impose a maximum spacing of 11 cm between vertical balusters for a landing balustrade. This kit complies with this standard with its 12 balusters over 2 metres. Where young children are present, check that no object less than 11 cm wide can pass between the balusters.

The straight staircase MORENO in solid fir is delivered as a kit for on-site assembly, with a maximum floor-to-floor height of 285 cm and 15 treads (including a flush landing tread). Its cuttable design allows the height to be adapted to the actual site configuration, within the limit indicated in the instructions. The width excluding handrail is 80 cm (82 cm with handrail), for a recommended stairwell opening of 85x273 cm. Tread height: 19 cm. Going: 18.3 cm. Tread section: 200x28 mm with risers, 220x28 mm without riser.
The fir is supplied untreated: a protective finish suitable for interior use must be applied after installation. The model is available with or without risers and with or without a handrail, depending on the version ordered. The fixing screws are not supplied and must be chosen according to the substrate (concrete, timber, etc.). The floor footprint of 273 cm must be verified before ordering, taking into account finished floor coverings and ceiling finishes.

Installation advice
Checking dimensions: verify the floor-to-floor height (maximum 285 cm) and the available stairwell opening (85x273 cm recommended) before unpacking the kit. These measurements must be taken on finished floors and ceilings, including coverings.
Cutting: if the floor-to-floor height is less than 285 cm, cut the stringers from the bottom according to the cutting chart provided. Cutting modifies the height of the first tread. Always check the result before final assembly.
Assembly: assemble the stringers, treads and risers according to the instructions provided, then fix securely to the floor and the upper support. A minimum of two people is required to handle the stringers.
Anchoring: fix the stringers to the floor and the support using fixings suitable for the material (concrete, timber, etc.). Fixings are not supplied — allow for suitable wall plugs for the substrate.
Handrail: the handrail can be installed after the staircase has been fitted. It is reversible — can be fitted on the right or left when going up, depending on your configuration.
Maintenance and protection
The raw fir delivered must imperatively receive a protective finish before first use to limit wear marks and make maintenance easier. Recommended options:
- ✓ Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance, renewal every 5 to 7 years
- ✓ Oil-wax: natural matt finish, maintenance every 1 to 2 years
- ✓ Interior paint: personalise the colour, minimum 2 coats
Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Avoid standing water on the treads. Check the tightness of fixings once a year.
WoodUp tip
Before cutting the stringers, always check the floor-to-floor height on finished floors and ceilings — including floor covering, parquet, tiles and suspended ceilings. An error of a few centimetres when taking measurements can render the staircase uncuttable once the stringers are too short.
Good to know before buying: the spindle handrail can be added after the staircase has been installed — reversible left or right. You can therefore order the staircase without a handrail and add one later if needed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I cut the MORENO staircase to my floor-to-floor height?
Cutting is carried out on the stringers from the bottom, according to the cutting chart provided in the instructions. Each centimetre removed modifies the height of the first tread. For a floor-to-floor height of 270 cm, for example, the cut is approximately 15 cm per stringer. Use a guided circular saw and work on both stringers simultaneously to ensure a perfectly level result.
What is the difference between the version with and without risers?
With risers, the staircase is closed: the vertical faces between the treads are clad, the structure looks visually fuller and lets less dust through. Without risers, the staircase is open, visually lighter and allows light to pass through. Both versions use the same stringer; only the tread section changes (200x28 mm with / 220x28 mm without).
Is the 85x273 cm stairwell opening a minimum or a recommended dimension?
This is a recommended dimension for comfortable fitting with installation tolerances. The strict minimum dimension is the staircase footprint (273 cm) + width (80 cm). In practice, allowing an extra 5 cm in width and 2 cm in length makes it easier to adjust plumb without constraint.
Which staircase should I choose for a mezzanine with a floor-to-floor height of 260 cm?
The MORENO is suitable: it can be cut to 260 cm without difficulty (a cut of approximately 25 cm on the stringers). For heights below 240 cm, the loft staircases AULAC or BASSEYRE, which are more compact, may be better suited depending on the available floor space.
Should fir be treated before or after installation?
The finish is applied after complete installation, once the staircase is fixed in place. If a handrail is planned, it can be fitted before or after finishing depending on your workflow. Treating before installation risks clogging the assembly areas and preventing adjustments. However, the hidden faces (undersides of treads, inner faces of stringers) can be treated before assembly for complete protection.
Why choose the MORENO rather than a quarter-turn staircase?
The straight staircase MORENO is suitable when the stairwell opening is rectangular and aligned along the length of the staircase, with no change of direction. It is simpler to install and more affordable. A quarter-turn staircase is necessary when the available floor space does not allow the full footprint (273 cm) to be aligned in a straight line, or when the room layout requires a change of direction.
