Solid fir balustrade kit 2m + 1 post — handrail 60x50mm, bottom rail 50x35mm, 12 spindles 50x20mm, wooden dowels and 1 post 60x60mm H 1.2m. Assembled height: 1.02m. Raw untreated timber, to be finished before installation. Indoor use only. Floor fixing plates not included.

Solid Fir Balustrade Kit 2m + 1 Post – Indoor Handrail for Self-Assembly

This solid raw fir balustrade kit covers a span of 2 metres and stands at a height of 1.02 m, in accordance with French standards for indoor landing balustrades. It is designed to secure mezzanines, landings or indoor passageways, and can be assembled without special machinery.

The kit includes all the load-bearing elements: a moulded handrail 60x50mm, a bottom rail 50x35mm, 12 spindles 50x20mm, wooden joining dowels and 1 post 60x60mm height 1.2m. The parts are pre-measured and machined: the grooves are integrated to position the spindles without a jig. Assembly is carried out by fixing the bottom rail to the substrate, inserting the spindles into the grooves, then placing the handrail on the posts. The fir is delivered raw and untreated: oiling, varnishing or staining before use will significantly extend the service life.

The floor fixing plates are not included as they depend on the substrate: wood, concrete or tiles each require different plates and fixings. The kit is designed exclusively for indoor use — fir, a naturally class 2 timber, does not withstand exposure to the elements without enhanced treatment and a change of category.

Installation advice

Preparation: Check the flatness and solidity of the substrate. The fir is delivered raw: apply a first coat of finish before assembly if you opt for a varnish or paint (easier access). You will need a drill, a spirit level and a screwdriver.

Installation: Start by fixing the bottom rail to the floor using brackets or plates suited to the substrate material. Position the spindles in the grooves of the bottom rail, maintaining a maximum spacing of 11 cm between spindles. Then fix the post or posts using plates (not included). Place the handrail on the posts and dowel the whole assembly together. Check the vertical alignment with a spirit level before final tightening.

Important: This kit covers a span of 2 m with 1 post. For longer spans, combine it with the 2m without post kit or the 1m without post kit (available separately). Allow for 1 post every 1.5 m maximum for the stability of the whole assembly.

Maintenance and protection

Solid fir is a softwood with a natural durability class of 2. In dry indoor use, it requires little maintenance, but a protective finish remains essential to limit marks and moisture absorption. Apply 2 to 3 coats of floor varnish, oil-wax or polyurethane varnish before or after assembly. Clean with slightly soapy water, without abrasive products. An annual check of the joints (tightening screws, condition of dowels) extends the service life beyond 15 years in dry indoor conditions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix the fir balustrade kit to a concrete floor?

On concrete, fix the post plates with expansion anchors or chemical anchors (not included). Choose stainless steel plates to avoid rust marks on the floor. Drill to a minimum diameter of 8 mm for Ø6 mm fixings. The plate must be fixed on at least 4 points to ensure the stability of the whole assembly.

Can the fir balustrade kit 2m be used outdoors?

No. Raw fir is not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure. For outdoor use, opt for parts in douglas fir or larch, available on Woodup. Douglas fir is naturally rated class 3b (sheltered outdoor timber) and is far more resistant to moisture.

How do I extend the balustrade beyond 2 metres?

Combine this kit with one or more 1m or 2m kits without post. Each extension fits seamlessly into the continuation of the handrail. Allow for 1 intermediate post every 1.5 m to maintain rigidity. Sections are joined by dowelling or metal brackets, to be ordered separately.

What finish should I choose for the fir on an indoor balustrade?

For maximum resistance to impact and scratches (staircase, active mezzanine): staircase floor varnish, 2–3 coats. For a matt and natural finish: oil-wax to be renewed every 2 years. For a coloured tint: interior wood stain or paint. Avoid outdoor products for indoor use, as they may emit solvents in enclosed spaces.

What is the regulation spacing between spindles?

French regulations require a maximum spacing of 11 cm between vertical balusters for an indoor landing balustrade. This kit complies with this standard with its 12 spindles over 2 metres. When young children are present, ensure that no object less than 11 cm wide can pass between the spindles.

Straight fir staircase delivered as a kit, trimmable up to 285 cm. 15 treads, width 80 cm (82 cm with handrail), section 200x28 mm, recommended stairwell opening 85x273 cm. Available with or without risers and handrail. Indoor use only.

MORENO Straight Fir Staircase - Trimmable Kit 285 cm, 15 Treads

The MORENO straight staircase in solid fir is delivered as a kit for on-site assembly, with a maximum floor-to-floor height of 285 cm and 15 treads (including one flush landing tread). Its trimmable design allows the height to be adapted to the actual site configuration, within the limit indicated in the instructions. The width without handrail is 80 cm (82 cm with handrail), for a recommended stairwell opening of 85x273 cm. Tread height: 19 cm. Going: 18.3 cm. Tread section: 200x28 mm with risers, 220x28 mm without risers.

The fir is supplied untreated: a suitable interior protective finish must be applied after installation. The model is available with or without risers and with or without a handrail, depending on the version ordered. Anchor fixings are not supplied and must be chosen according to the substrate (concrete, wood, etc.). The floor footprint of 273 cm must be verified before ordering, taking into account finished floor coverings and ceiling finishes.

Installation advice

Dimension check: verify the floor-to-floor height (maximum 285 cm) and the available stairwell opening (85x273 cm recommended) before unpacking the kit. These measurements must be taken on finished floor and ceiling, including floor coverings.

Trimming: if the floor-to-floor height is less than 285 cm, trim the stringers from the bottom according to the cutting chart provided. Trimming affects the height of the first tread. Always check the result before final assembly.

Assembly: assemble the stringers, treads and risers according to the instructions provided, then fix securely to the floor and upper support. A minimum of two people is required to handle the stringers.

Anchoring: fix the stringers to the floor and upper support with fixings suited to the material (concrete, wood, etc.). Fixings are not supplied — allow for suitable wall plugs for the substrate.

Handrail: the handrail can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled. It is reversible — can be fitted on the right or left when going up, depending on your configuration.

Maintenance and protection

The raw fir supplied must receive a protective finish before first use to limit wear marks and make maintenance easier. Recommended options:

  • ? Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance, renewal every 5 to 7 years
  • ? Oil-wax: natural matt finish, maintenance every 1 to 2 years
  • ? Interior paint: colour customisation, minimum 2 coats

Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Avoid standing water on treads. Check fixing tightness once a year.

WoodUp tip

Before trimming the stringers, always check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and ceiling — including floor covering, parquet, tiles, and suspended ceilings. A measurement error of a few centimetres can render the staircase impossible to trim once the stringers are too short.

Good to know before purchasing: the spindle handrail can be added after the staircase has been assembled — reversible left or right. You can therefore order the staircase without a handrail and add one later if needed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I trim the MORENO staircase to my floor-to-floor height?

Trimming is carried out on the stringers from the bottom, using the cutting chart provided in the instructions. Each centimetre removed alters the height of the first tread. For a floor-to-floor height of 270 cm for example, the trim is approximately 15 cm per stringer. Use a guided circular saw and work on both stringers simultaneously to ensure a perfectly level result.

What is the difference between the version with and without risers?

With risers, the staircase is closed: the vertical faces between the treads are clad, the structure is visually more solid and lets less dust through. Without risers, the staircase is open, visually lighter and allows light to pass through. Both versions use the same stringer, only the tread section changes (200x28 mm with / 220x28 mm without).

Is the 85x273 cm stairwell opening a minimum or a recommended dimension?

This is a recommended dimension for comfortable installation with fitting clearance. The strict minimum dimension is the staircase footprint (273 cm) + width (80 cm). In practice, allowing 5 cm extra in width and 2 cm in length makes it easier to adjust plumb without constraint.

Which staircase should I choose for a mezzanine with a floor-to-floor height of 260 cm?

The MORENO is suitable: it can be trimmed to 260 cm without difficulty (trimming approximately 25 cm from the stringers). For a height below 240 cm, the AULAC or BASSEYRE loft staircases, which are more compact, may be more suitable depending on the available floor space.

Should fir be treated before or after installation?

The finish should be applied after full installation, once the staircase is fixed and the handrail fitted. Treating before installation risks clogging the assembly areas and preventing adjustments. However, hidden surfaces (undersides of treads, inner faces of stringers) can be treated before assembly for complete protection.

Why choose the MORENO rather than a quarter-turn staircase?

The MORENO straight staircase is suitable when the stairwell opening is rectangular and aligned with the length of the staircase, with no change of direction. It is simpler to install and more affordable. A quarter-turn staircase is necessary when the floor space does not allow the full footprint (273 cm) to be aligned in a straight line, or when the room configuration requires a change of direction.
